I minimize cognitive/behavioral perspectives and interventions, only including them as components of gestalt, humanistic, client-centered, interpersonal and existential approaches.
I regard much of 'psychopathology' as well-intended (but ineffective) efforts to contend with pain and fear, and to pursue needs and wants. So, in psychotherapy, I invite my clients to explore, identify, and take guidance from their emotional experiences, honoring their depression, anxiety, and other symptoms while finding more effective ways of living well. I also provide psychological and neuropsychological assessments.

Life's journey is rough. Not every path is smooth or easy and many are difficult and even dangerous. There are times we need someone to walk with us; perhaps help us find a new direction. Having someone that understands because he's been there, makes all the difference in the world. In addition to working with couples and families, he enjoys bringing hope to men. He understands the struggles men face. He shares life and relational skills, including: developing problem solving skills, overcoming depression, reducing anxiety, having victory over addiction, growing through life development stages and recovering from the symptoms of trauma.

Hello. My name is Jeff Watros. Since 1995, I have been practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Perhaps you've noticed one reality that applies to everyone of us is interaction with other human beings. Whether in the context of family, marriage, friend, acquaintance or total stranger, we can find ourselves struggling to understand one another. Sometimes hurt results. However, relationships can be repaired with a willing heart and humble attitude.

There is never a wrong time to start therapy, nor is there a right one. We won’t worry about right or wrong, but instead we’ll accept where you are - as we work together to discover where you want to go and how to get there. I spend a lot of my free time hiking, seeking out new and interesting terrain. The growth you will hopefully experience during our work together may be much like a challenging hike, with some gentle slopes and triumphant summits, but also with trips, stumbles, and strenuous climbs. I cannot climb your mountains for you, but I will climb them with you and help to show you the way forward.

If you are anxious, depressed, burdened by trauma, or struggling to cope with the people in your life, you are in the right place. I have been helping people in the Richmond area overcome and thrive in the face of these challenges since 2013. I approach treatment collaboratively, balancing acceptance and change in order to help clients meet their personal goals. I provide an interpersonal approach to therapy, where we work together to understand the roots of the presenting concern.
While life events and transitions can be overwhelming and isolating, you never have to be alone. Through the therapeutic process, I will empathetically work with you to understand your goals and help guide you to wellness. I love working with ages spanning from late teens to older adults during life transitions. I feel as though we can all have a “harsh inner critic”; this critic is difficult to silence or challenge. Many times, we ask ourselves, “why did this happen” or “why do I feel this way”? When we ask ourselves “why”, we tend to reinforce shame. Think about it, “why” indicates there is just one answer.

I have a strong background in evidence-based treatments that focus on individual and interpersonal factors.
Psychotherapy provides a unique opportunity to decrease suffering and increase quality of life. My approach to treatment is both collaborative and pragmatic - we will develop a good sense of why your experience makes sense, determine the best treatment strategies that match your preferences, and track progress over time. We will work to achieve both near-term relief and larger, thematic improvements in your life.

Navigating life's complexities, including anxiety, depression, substance use, life transitions, and interpersonal relationships can often feel like facing a series of overwhelming challenges. Whether it's mental, physical, spiritual, or relational difficulties, it's easy to feel drained, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to move forward. However, you don't have to face it alone. I provide a safe, supportive, and (sometimes) humorous space for the exploration and treatment of mental health, interpersonal, and substance use concerns for the 16-75+ population. Both male and female clients are accepted.

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist who specializes in treating children, young adults, and adults using an approach that integrates classic and modern psychodynamic theory with contemporary approaches including family systems, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based treatment. Therapy can be an invaluable part of helping individuals to overcome life's challenges. Whether our struggle is related to life transitions, loss, trauma or interpersonal difficulties, painful feelings commonly arise such as depression and anxiety. My goal is to provide a therapeutic environment and a collaborative partnership to individuals that seek relief from these painful symptoms and hope to achieve growth and positive change in their lives.

Many high-performers know they are capable of achieving more but feel stuck at times. Do you feel that despite having a lot of things together, something is missing that is holding you back? The clients I work with have typically achieved success in many aspects of life, but they struggle in others. When facing challenges that seem insurmountable, we all can benefit from expert guidance and counseling. Life should be joyful and meaningful. It is natural to seek connection and to want to discover our inner selves. Even though we long for inner and outer harmony, it is easy to feel down, stuck, alone, unfulfilled. Many of us find communicating, listening, and being vulnerable challenging. Sometimes it seems like the past is close behind and it is hard to move forward brightly. Counseling is here to help give you space to achieve mental and emotional wellness.

I offer therapy & evaluation (testing) services for those 18+. Clients don't come to me because they are happy. They come, most likely, because they are in pain and hurt. They are tired of feeling stuck, and the fear, tears, and whatever seems to be causing them all. They aren’t interested in therapy because they want therapy. In fact, they are not even sure IF they want therapy—but they ARE sure they want to get unstuck and feel better. So, for you: here you are. . . not all that sure that this is going to help but damn sure you want to do something that might make a positive change and get your life moving forward again.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
