I have endured many losses of my own; however, the most significant death loss was that of my late husband, Chris, who died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2007.
I am an associate therapist at The Center for Compassion, where we provide mindful care for painful times. I believe that with the proper support, a person can begin to rebuild, adjust, and make meaning out of their experiences and losses, all while continuing to honor and feel connected to their loved one along the way. I am passionate about helping others navigate through grief, loss, trauma, and life’s many challenges. I have experience in several different social work settings; including schools, hospice, and grief support. These experiences have given me the skills to support those enduring many different life challenges.

The primary goal of therapy is to enliven and enhance your emotional experiences and relationships through actionable insights. During this process, I pay close attention to what you say about yourself as guiding points for potential growth.

I work with people who have experienced trauma, grief, and loss.
Hi, I’m Cynthia. Welcome to Desert Somatics & Psychotherapy. In this practice, I endeavor to create a safe, healing space for people to work with the most vulnerable parts of themselves. When you are facing anxiety, depression, burnout, overwhelm, grief and loss, or the residual effects of traumatic situations or experiences, it can feel insurmountable. My passion is helping people to take the big, scary events, feelings, thoughts, and life experiences they are facing and to break them down into manageable pieces we can work through together. In so doing, we find that healing and repair are possible.

I have over 17 years of experience in hospice care, grief and loss, and psychotherapy; using DBT, CBT, ACT, and EMDR, as well as the understanding of neurophysiology.
Have you been struggling with anxiety or depression from unresolved incidents that have happened in your life? I believe that the way to healing is through connection; to yourself, others, nature, and a higher power (if this is important to you), and building skills to deepen these connections. If you would like to feel more at peace within yourself, and be an active participant in your healing journey, I can help you find the peace that you are longing to have and your ability to move your dreams forward.

We are a small practice that focus primarily on grief but understand loss often accompanies overlapping concerns, family changes, employment and relationship issues.
I believe that change occurs when we are met with compassion, deep listening and provided with a sense of hope. I focus specifically on traumatic grief with an understanding there is no wrong way to feel, no timeline or expectations. My approach is individualized and draws upon several interventions such as the ATTEND Model, mindfulness and CBT. I come from a trauma-informed perspective and believe that each person's experience is unique with their own strengths to be utilized. Many of my clients have lost loved ones due to suicide, homicide, accidental deaths, medical malpractice, unresolved deaths and long term illnesses.

These life experiences help to inform my work with those experiencing trauma, loss, transition and grief.
Humans are by nature social animals and yet many of us have lost connection within ourselves and our community. I believe this is due, in part, to a frantic world that has led to relational trauma, a poor sense of self, health challenges, addiction, loss and isolation. Feeling relevant, finding meaning, having a mission, knowing joy and learning emotional regulation/tolerance/resiliency are ways in which we can heal ourselves and the world at large. I work with individuals (adults only) and couples.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
