Life is messy for all of us. You may be feeling overwhelmed, worried, depleted, or like you’re never quite good enough. Your thoughts may be critical and harsh (and you may not even notice – that’s been the case for so long). You may be wondering when you’re going to get it together. Being a human is hard work. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, trouble managing your emotions, or another human experience you may need support with, therapy can help. Therapy with me is authentic, connected, and informal (read: I don't write notes in session, I don't typically use worksheets).

I was drawn to working with women in abusive relationships after two sexual assaults in my 20’s started me thinking about all the fear and trauma in women’s lives. Working in a battered women’s shelter, I realized many women are living under intolerable, often life-threatening conditions of control, threat and violence—and that it is the women, not their abusers, who are routinely judged and blamed, depicted as liars and mentally ill. I saw no pathology in the women coming to us for help. I saw bottomless grief. I saw terror, and shell shock, and women trying to protect their kids. I saw what can happen when women are not believed.

We all experience challenges and yet through insight, compassion and action we are able to grow and transform. I aim to walk alongside clients to build coping and resiliency while exploring sources of distress to confidently confront life’s struggles. I have worked with individuals wanting to heal from a traumatic past or finding their path, and couples feeling stuck in dysfunction or wanting to heal from infidelity. Clients’ marginalized identities, and the complexities this may add, is integrated in a culturally sensitive way-should clients wish to explore and incorporate this into counselling.

Accepting clients for daytime. I have always been curious about what makes a person who they are. I believe that we all have wounds from our past, whether it be from relationships or experiences, that have shaped who we are, how we relate and how we view our world. Although our past may shape us, I believe making connections from our past to our present allows us to heal and become the person we aspire to be. The healing occurs in the present when we change our ways of relating to the self and to the world.

Beyond my credentials, I've learned keenly from each of my clients over the years, and my practice is informed by rich life experience. I work collaboratively, guiding you in revealing underlying causes and patterns that may be posing challenges in your life, in identifying and clarifying your own goals, and supporting you in carrying out strategies best suited for you to reach them. Each counselling need is unique. Always listening and with empathy, I can challenge you without threatening, and meet you where you're really at - which may not necessarily be where you assume you are.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
