About

I was drawn to working with women in abusive relationships after two sexual assaults in my 20’s started me thinking about all the fear and trauma in women’s lives. Working in a battered women’s shelter, I realized many women are living under intolerable, often life-threatening conditions of control, threat and violence—and that it is the women, not their abusers, who are routinely judged and blamed, depicted as liars and mentally ill. I saw no pathology in the women coming to us for help. I saw bottomless grief. I saw terror, and shell shock, and women trying to protect their kids. I saw what can happen when women are not believed.
These experiences were the foundation of a lifetime of advocacy for women. I worked in a counselling agency and police crisis unit, using a feminist approach to shed light on the factors that entrap women with abusive men (conditioning, threats, coercive control, systemic failures) ——and to help women recover their voice, judgment, and capacity to act.
Abuse silences, isolates, confuses. I can help you assess whether you're being abused, whether you and your children are safe, and help you strategize to regain control of your life. Even if the abuse is "just emotional", this can be hazardous terrain; no woman should have to navigate it alone. Please email me with any questions, or to set up a consult.

Donna F Johnson's Groups

Partner Abuse (start date to be determined)

Working in groups help to quickly overcome the shame and stigma surrounding men's violence in intimate relationships. There is power in speaking with others in the same boat, and in recognizing the shared plight of women. Many problems considered individual and psychological are recognized as common and social, requiring political solutions. Self-esteem is restored as women realize they've been duped by patriarchy's fictions into living partial lives, tolerating mistreatment, keeping silent, etc. Topics will include why women stay; the 8 types of abuse; brainwashing; anger as strength; impact on kids; how to avoid the same trap.

Mothers Who Have Lost a Child to Suicide

When a mother's worst nightmare is realized through the suicide of her child, she can be overwhelmed with grief and the idea that she has completely failed as a mother. There can be crushing fatigue, unmitigated despair, and a collapse of normal functioning. Meanwhile there is pressure on her as ‘mother' to resume her role as family caretaker. This group will create a compassionate space for mothers to come together to support each through catastrophic loss; to give voice to unsayable feelings; and to examine their complex emotional and intellectual reactions to their child's suicide.
