Opportunities for healing for healing are all around us and can come in many forms, such as having a safe space to talk or getting our bodies moving in healthy ways. I believe that we are healthiest when we allow ourselves to be exactly who we are. I have special interests in relational and religious trauma, as well as working with people with addiction issues, severe depression, anxiety disorders, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. No matter where you are in your healing journey, I hope to join you and help you see that you are not alone in the struggle. You are your greatest healer, and I will be your guide along the way.

I work with people who struggle with mood disorders. Often when people struggle with their relationships and experiences, or have been diagnosed with a mental health problem, a kind of fracture occurs between themselves and their real experience. Together we host the best expression of your authenticity--in spite of the labels that would diminish your unique experience. We discover meaning and make decisions about what you want.

Hello! My name is Barbara and I am a licensed clinical social worker (LICSW) in the state of Washington, with over 20 years of experience in the mental health and social work fields. I want to help you navigate your emotional journey towards well-being and personal growth. You may have felt like a "black sheep"- different from others, neurodivergent, unconventional, outside the norm, quirky, on the edge, or even a bit rebellious. I love to help people who are straddling cultures and have a complex relationship with duty and autonomy. So many of us have internalized beliefs around what we are supposed to be doing and how we are supposed to live our lives but haven’t had a chance to sit down and workshop whether this is congruent with our overall goals and wants for ourselves. When we don’t take the time and space to heal the inner child and build self confidence to live our best lives, things like anxiety, depression, and emotional reactivity can creep in keeping us feeling stuck.

Today's young adults have the ability to enact positive change in the world around us. With years of experience in supporting children, teens, and adults achieve their full potential and navigate rough patches, allow me to lend a hand. I view you as the expert on yourself, and come alongside as a coach to support and guide you in your journey. With families and children I utilize a team-based approach. All young adults can use an extra person in their corner to help navigate childhood, and I believe that working as a team with the family system allows for family members to grow and learn together.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by habits and mindsets that you can't seem to get out of? Have you tried all the techniques but still can't seem to shake the anxious thoughts that invade your mind? Do you often find yourself triggered from a past experience or relationship that keeps surfacing and stopping you in your tracks? Do you continue to return to relationship patterns and relationship choices that you told yourself you would never engage in again? Do you struggle with self worth and body image? Do you feel overall stuck and like there is deeper work that needs to be done?

I work with those who struggle with anger. Often times the anger is brought on by unmet expectations and merely a symptom of deeper issues under the surface. It's my job to metaphorically stand in a place you can not see, and point you in the right direction as to the cause of what is contributing to the anger. By doing so, you can receive insight that will enrich your life and change it for the better.

Are you feeling misunderstood or disconnected from your partner? Tired of having the same argument over and over again and never getting anywhere? Do you feel lonely in your relationship and discouraged about how to get close again? Sometimes it can feel hopeless. You may have settled into a pattern of quiet resignation, filling your time with distractions, and trying to ignore the fact that neither of you is truly happy. Whatever your circumstances, couples therapy can help you identify the negative patterns keeping you stuck and build a stronger, healthier relationship in which you feel seen, heard and connected.

Let's get started, call me so you can start getting relief from your pain, confusion or fear. I provide psychotherapy and counseling for adults, teens, children and couples. A sign that therapy would be helpful is the presence of recurring pain in relationships, lack of intimacy, loss of friendships, work or career dissatisfaction, shame, physical symptoms or lack of meaning in your life.

At its core, I believe therapy to be about creating space for change. People come to therapy for a variety of reasons—seeking support and healing, desiring change, looking for relief from pain. With a relational and trauma-informed lens, we’ll look at how you landed here, in an effort to find new ways of being that may be kinder to yourself and more congruent with a whole and healthy life. I work with teens, adults, and couples on issues of trauma, anxiety, grief, relationships, life transitions, and identity formation. I have focused much of my work supporting women recovering from trauma.

I am a licensed clinical social worker (with a doctorate from Columbia University) with over 40 years of practice experience with children, families, couples, and adults. My approach to our work is "psychodynamic" and I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship. I am open to consultation, crisis intervention, short term therapy, and more intensive, insight oriented treatment. The "ideal client" is the one who is willing to work hard. So am I!

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
