Human suffering stems from unacknowledged trauma which develops multiple ways including spans of prolonged stress, surgery, crime, grief, injury, childhood neglect or abuse, domestic violence or bullying. Trauma symptoms- depression, anxiety, and PTSD, are difficult to overcome. With traditional therapy you may find symptoms keep resurfacing, thus impairing your functioning and leading you to feel frustrated and discouraged. But, there is another way to do therapy, the EMDR way. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a therapy that goes directly to the trauma by targeting the way it is stored in your brain.

My motto is, “reveal the root, expose the lie and heal the wounded spirit.” It is my passion to work with those who struggle with severe trauma and emotional abuse. Based on the comfort level of the patient - faith, spirituality and prayer can often be a vital part of the therapeutic process. I strive to meet the unique and individual needs of each client and adjust my approach accordingly. I truly consider it an honor and a privilege to partner with you in your journey towards wholeness. There is a plan and a purpose for your life, full of unique strengths and talents. My goal is to help you become all that you were created to be.

I don’t practice from a single approach or theory, though I trend toward a relational, psychodynamic approach, with cognitive behavioral insights that focus on roots, not just symptoms.
Outwardly you seem to have it together, while anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or plain old self-loathing drain your battery more than anyone could guess. Or maybe it’s depression you keep hidden with excuses and isolation. Or a loss of identity that happened when something major shifted and you no longer fit where you used to fit. You’d appreciate humor in your sessions, and prefer warmth instead a blank slate of clinical detachment, but you especially don’t want to feel rushed, pressured, or “evaluated”. Maybe your story feels impossibly complex, maybe inconsistent, maybe you feel two opposite ways at the same time. I get it.

I use a psychodynamic approach, helping you gain insight into thoughts and feelings to promote change and working collaboratively to explore factors that contribute to current difficulties.
I believe that we grow across the lifespan. It is never too late to look inside ourselves, understand and connect with ourselves and those around us, and believe that change is possible. Even in the most painful, lonely, and frightening life situations, we can still reach out to get help – even if we don’t know what it is yet. I offer a connection and a safe place to explore your inner world, in an open and accepting manner.

My work integrates knowledge from psychodynamic, insight-oriented, strengths-based, relational, and self-compassion approaches, as well as mindfulness and written techniques.
I am a bilingual psychologist who is passionate about offering people a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment in which to grow and explore themselves. I view psychotherapy as being a collaborative experience where the therapeutic relationship drives meaningful change and growth. As my clients experience those uncomfortable "growth spurt" moments, I aim to support them by modeling authenticity and encouraging them to practice patience and acceptance with themselves. It is my personal belief that therapy can not only lead to symptom reduction, but also to greater personal satisfaction and inner tranquility.

To do this I believe an eclectic approach grounded in neurobiological/brain-based, CBT, person centered therapy, and a psychodynamic perspective allows for flexibility in meeting client’s specified goals.
Making the decision to seek support can be a difficult task and shows courage. Opening up and sharing your private thoughts, emotions, fears, and experiences with a therapist can be frightening. However within a trusting, confidential, and healthy therapeutic relationship it can also be rewarding and a great benefit. I make it a point to never take for granted the gift clients give in revealing their personal history in the context of therapy. I endeavor to assist you in gaining insight, use new approaches to aid in making positive adjustments in your interpersonal, family, social, and work life.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive behavioral (CBT) perspectives have been my strongest influences.
Are your health issues overwhelming your life? Living with chronic medical issues like pain can be isolating, frightening, and dejecting. As a health psychologist, I offer hope, knowledge, and support to individuals struggling with complex challenges. Every day, scientific advancements illuminate the integral relationship between mind and body. Effective treatment of one requires caring for both. In working with me, you can expect kindness, humor, acceptance, and a lot of mixed metaphors. I hope that, through our work together, you can find sources of light on your darkest days.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
