Let's have the conversation that changes your life. I help gifted problem solvers overcome the challenges (and clean up the messes) they tend to create. I'm The Silicon Valley Therapist, a former engineer with genuine people skills. I'm fluent in both English and Nerd, and can bridge the abyss between them. Would insight, compassion and inspiration help? My esoteric blend of experience, skill and humor enables individuals to thrive and couples to reconnect. I work with HiTech professionals and the Super-Intelligent (and those trying to love them). What does "doing better" mean to you right now?

As a therapist, I aspire to create a safe and accepting therapeutic environment to facilitate your personal growth; relieve symptoms of depression or anxiety; and/or help you create stronger and more honest relationships. During your sessions we will work together to get a clearer understanding of the unhealthy patterns which may be standing in the way of your achieving fulfillment in your life. My goal is that my patients leave therapy feeling supported, understood and comfortably challenged. It is a guided mutual process in which you develop better coping skills with a deeper capacity to handle emotional difficulties.

I am a licensed psychologist with vast experience in diagnostic evaluations of children, adolescents, and adults. I am also an Adjunct Professor at the Stanford Department of Psychiatry where I train and supervise Forensic Psychiatry Fellows. In my practice, I offer a variety of evaluation options to help you understand your, or your loved ones', strengths and challenges as well as their root cause. The purpose of these evaluations is two-fold: to present a "full picture" understanding of a person, and to provide individualized strength-based recommendations.

It's hard to accept you're at a point in your life where you're feeling stuck and you need help. And it takes courage to ask for it. My goal is to create a safe, non-judgemental space in which to help you explore the issues that brought you into therapy. To discover together the underlying patterns of thinking and acting which perpetuate your suffering. And to work towards increased awareness and achievement of your most deeply-felt personal goals.

While our past can deeply impact our sense of who we are and the choices we make, it does not need to define us. With care, attention and a little practice, I believe that it is entirely possible to transform familiar but unwanted ways of thinking, feeling and relating. I enjoy helping individuals of all ages develop healthier ways of being that are built on a more compassionate relationship with themselves and those they love.

Hello! I work with adults, adolescents and families. I believe we all have unique, innate strengths that we can rely upon to get us through tough situations but that sometimes it is hard for us to find them on our own. I work with my clients to uncover and support each individual's own innate strengths while integrating a variety of research-based interventions to reduce anxiety, improve mood, process trauma, and improve relationships.

I continue to be thrilled by the capacity of humans to thrive in the face of even impossible challenges, and by feeling the spirit they draw upon to do so. Just as humbling is recognizing how much that ability can wither or grow from subtle but profound shifts of thought and emotion.

I aspire to create a safe, structured and warm therapeutic environment to facilitate the patient's personal growth while helping patients develop more insight, explore the history of their problems, and recognize unhealthy patterns. My therapeutic process has developed over 25 years of practice and training. Some of the areas of psychology from which I draw are psychodynamic, attachment theory, object relations and family systems. My goal is that through therapy, my patients feel understood, supported and comfortably challenged. During our first meeting we explore together what brought you to therapy..what is occuring in your life that is causing difficulties, and where perhaps you may be hindering yourself. For the most part therapy is a guided process where you learn more deeply about yourself and develop better coping skills with an improved capacity to handle emotional difficulties in a healthy, fulfilling manner.

When the impact of mental health becomes too much, because that’s what happens to humans, we can start to feel overwhelmed and naturally our mind and body finds ways to cope. Sometimes the coping mechanisms people try don't always work. Healing is a journey, and there is no "right" way to do it. It's important to listen to your body, seek support and trust that you have the resilience and strength to make it through even the hardest moments. You don't have to have a mental illness to prioritize your mental health. Everyone can benefit from taking care of their emotional wellbeing.

During the over 20 years I have been in practice I have witnessed how profoundly helpful it is for a person to be listened to with care and attention. My commitment to you is to create a setting that helps you share yourself with someone who initially you don't know - but will come to know. I want to help you feel safe and comfortable enough to speak about your concerns. In addition, we will address your issues with the objective of getting to the source of the problem so that you can feel more long-term relief.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Los Altos?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
