I primarily work from a relational psychodynamic perspective with a focus on interpersonal neurobiology and trauma-informed narrative and somatic therapy, as well as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.
Welcome to Hawthorn Trail Therapy; I'm so glad you're here. Human-ing is hard. As relational beings our hearts are broken by grief, loss, and harm, and we can become disconnected from ourselves, others, and the world. The hawthorn tree symbolizes courage and resilience, and is known for healing of the heart. It takes courage to seek therapy; it is a step on the path of compassionate awareness toward healing and home. For me, this path is one of developing safety and flexibility in the nervous system, moving out of bracing or collapse toward openness and connection, finding new ways of being that lead to freedom and flourishing.

Our therapists implement a variety of techniques including DBT, CBT, somatic work, and mindfulness into client treatments.
The ancient Hawaiians call the soul ‘Uhane: at times when we are in pain or suffering we may feel like we are “ ‘uhane ‘ole” -which means without a soul. True peace and healing comes when the ‘uhane, the physical, spiritual and mental state, is healed. At ‘Uhane Counseling we strive to heal the soul in order to restore peace and tranquility to each client.

I specialize in working with young adults, kids, teens, families, and groups through an eclectic person-centered approach utilizing modalities such as somatic, CBT, art, motivational interviewing, + more.
I work with clients to process trauma, emotions, and life stressors; cope with and ease symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, and post-traumatic stress and expand their window of tolerance/what they are able to tolerate; rewire thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and thereby one’s environment to align with their authentic truth and desires; define and draw boundaries; and identify core beliefs. I love to help women create a life in alignment with their menstrual cycle (intentional scheduling, eating, intimacy, and socializing for optimal energy functioning), as well as help all people structure and deepen their spiritual path.

Hi, I'm Kate. I provide counseling to individuals and couples in the north Seattle area. My approach to therapy begins with relationship as I believe both harm and healing happen within the context of relationships. Perhaps you are tired of feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed. Maybe you've experienced a significant loss that has shifted your roles and beliefs. You don't have to figure this out alone. My focus is to develop a trusting relationship with you and provide a safe environment where you can tell your story, feel accepted, and experience the wholeness and healing that comes out of that process.

On the outside you appear to have a great life. Meanwhile, internally you feel empty, hopeless, on edge, excessive worrying, and an inability to create balance in all areas of your life. You’re probably exhausted from attempting to tackle these uncomfortable feelings day after day to no avail. It’s almost as if the harder you try to feel at peace or content with yourself you sink deeper into feeling you’re just not good enough or a failure. You’ve possibly wondered if there is something wrong with you.

I treat individuals living with anxiety, trauma, depression, and ADHD. I aim to provide a comfortable atmosphere for people to feel understood and supported in their experiences. I work best with those who are motivated for therapy, enjoy humor, and are open to new ideas. My patients determine their own goals for therapy. I believe in educating patients on brain health and proven techniques to help build self-esteem, better habits, and coping skills to improve their daily functioning. I emphasize to patients that healing isn't linear, or one-size-fits-all, and to prioritize self-compassion during our time together.

I utilize the relationship between the body and mind to help clients process traumatic events through somatic and/or EMDR approaches.
There are many reasons someone seeks therapy. Whether it is from years of not feeling good enough or a life changing event, I can provide clarity, help you develop a better understanding of yourself, as well as help you to process trauma. By building an understanding of each part of the self and how the mind and body interplay, we can lessen traumatic and unwanted responses and build self-reliance and self-worth. I have a collaborative, holistic, and solution minded approach to therapy. I specialize in working with those who are neurodivergent and/or members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
