As Licensed Behavior Analyst, I founded ASBI to support our neurodivergent communities by making ABA with a trauma-informed approach, more accessible and individualized. I lead with the assumption that each client I work with has had trauma that may have inhibited their emotional growth, skill development, and the ability to set boundaries, or form trusting relationships. Compassionate care is an essential component of my practice, where trust is built and skills are practiced in a safe space, both physically and emotionally.

I work with clients within an attachment-based/relational framework, which posits that healing and transformation occurs through a safe, authentic, empathically attuned, and responsive therapeutic relationship. From this framework, I tend to integrate several different approaches to therapy. Common to each approach is an emphasis on increasing self-awareness and understanding of yourself, which includes your emotional and relational needs and how you go about trying to meet those needs in either helpful or unhelpful ways.

I work with tweens, teens, parents and individual adults who are struggling with overwhelming worry, sadness, and stress. Whether because of past traumas, neurodivergence, or feeling like you're not quite sure who you are, I can help figure out what’s getting in the way. I support kids and their parents in learning how to manage difficult emotions, friendships and behaviors, while nurturing connection and joy. I support teens and adults in finding their voice, feeling confident, and discovering the strengths that have helped them get this far while envisioning a future that feels authentic and aligned with who they want to be.

Life's stressors can be overwhelming. Therapy shows us new ways of being and engaging through practicing adaptive skills and mindfulness. I help my clients uncover connections between past experiences that shape their current ways of coping. This leads to the ability to recognize inner strengths, identify and embrace discomfort, and cultivate self-compassion to find peace and true connection. With empathetic listening in a safe environment, I strive to be my client’s ally. I use cognitive and somatic modalities to connect mind and body and tailor my approach to your needs, even using humor when appropriate!

I have been in this field of psychotherapy for 25 years. I tend to be more pragmatic, excelling in the "Now What?" stage. I am solution-focused and action-oriented providing applicable skills and cognitive understanding. I have worked in two different private practices since my graduation from Seattle Pacific University back in 2006 before I started my own here in Edmonds, WA. So I have gleaned enough experience and confidence to provide you a mental health service you can trust. If you're interested in self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-disciple, I invite you.

The ancient Hawaiians call the soul ‘Uhane: at times when we are in pain or suffering we may feel like we are “ ‘uhane ‘ole” -which means without a soul. True peace and healing comes when the ‘uhane, the physical, spiritual and mental state, is healed. At ‘Uhane Counseling we strive to heal the soul in order to restore peace and tranquility to each client.

I believe that this decision is one that should be met with unconditional positive regard, compassion, and non-judgmental understanding. I specialize in working with individuals seeking to manage anxiety, depression and other difficult emotions, have more successful and fulfilling relationships, and change harmful or unwanted patterns of behavior. I also work with individuals with significant trauma histories, experiencing grief and loss, or experiencing symptoms of severe mental illness.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
