As a licensed mental health counselor, I work primarily with teens and young adults. I love the opportunity to support young people as they grow and overcome challenges in their lives. I believe that you and your family are doing the best you can with the tools you have, and if you’re searching for a therapist, you likely need more support to thrive. I'm especially skilled at working with youth who have experienced trauma or who struggle with anxiety, depression and/or self-harm. As of April 2024, I have some limited availability for in-person services.

The goal of my approach to therapy is to get your defense system out of the way so that you can operate out of your true sense of self, begin to create boundaries, and make choices truly reflective of your own wants and needs. When you achieve this, you no longer need to rely upon the destructive coping techniques previously used to prevent your full evolution and integration of body, mind, and spirit.

Life's stressors can be overwhelming. Therapy shows us new ways of being and engaging through practicing adaptive skills and mindfulness. I help my clients uncover connections between past experiences that shape their current ways of coping. This leads to the ability to recognize inner strengths, identify and embrace discomfort, and cultivate self-compassion to find peace and true connection. With empathetic listening in a safe environment, I strive to be my client’s ally. I use cognitive and somatic modalities to connect mind and body and tailor my approach to your needs, even using humor when appropriate!

Things beyond our control in life sometimes shake loose issues that we thought we were past. Coping that has worked before, no longer seems to work or is even now getting in our way in our lives. There are sometimes moments where we can't see beyond the here and now which makes us believe that things will always be the way they currently are. These are pivotal life moments that allow us the opportunity to seek a different path. This may be the time to begin to seek guidance or dig deeper into our issues in order to grow.

I am particularly interested in working with people struggling with the on going effects of adverse childhood experiences like abuse, neglect and loss; especially those of early childhood. Often people suffering from the painful effects of traumatic experiences have never really felt whole, known peace or felt truly acceptable. Much too often they blame themselves. Bouts of depression and anxiety are all too frequent. In therapy you undo the underlying causes of fear, shame and grief that drive depression, anxiety and dissociation. You learn to live a life that is meaningful, present focused and free from the shadows of the past.

I am currently fuIl and I am not accepting new clients. I join with clients in a safe, non-judgmental and collaborative way. We will work together to explore, understand and resolve the challenges related to the counseling goals they have identified. My treatment approach is both creative and flexible. I allow clients to direct each session with validating and encouraging support from me throughout the process. While using various treatment models such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to cater to the needs of each client, I compliment each model with a strengths-based approach.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
