A large part of why I have chosen to be a counselor is to simply help those in need. Many people come to therapy wanting relief from life’s challenges, answers to hard questions, or simply to be seen by and connected to another. My hope is that by choosing to engage in therapy, you will be able to experience all the goodness that comes from being respected, valued, and cared for in a truly meaningful way.

My name is Tom Boulding. I am a British-born physician assistant with a background in occupational therapy. I believe in viewing individuals as holistic beings, recognizing that they are more than just the sum of their symptoms or the medications they take. I advocate for a patient-centered approach that prioritizes collaboration and empowerment. I believe in the value of informed and transparent medication management, where individuals are actively involved in decision-making processes regarding their treatment plans.

Am I being understood? Am I too much or not enough? What is my impact on others? Why do I feel so disconnected? I'd like to invite you to a therapy group for all genders, races and identities, which addresses and explores relationship issues. The aim of the group includes bringing awareness to how our communication styles impact others and how this affects our interactions with others. We explore ways to manage this relational anxiety by both participating and reflecting on our experiences as they occur in the group.

What is your biggest challenge that, if overcome, would completely change your life? If it was simply a matter of knowing the answer to this question, everyone would be living exactly the life they desired. In reality, "knowing" is only half of the journey. Working together, we will co-create a partnership to explore your opportunities and challenges, making space in your life for the future that you desire. I believe that everyone can and should be living the life of their dreams, because, after all, this is not a dress rehearsal!

I have been facilitating DBT groups for 8 years. The goal of DBT is to find your own "Middle Path", create a "Wise Mind", and learn how to "Build a Life Worth Living." Practicing DBT skills combined with human connections created in the group is the foundation for a successful outcome. This group is a safe place to learn how to identify, describe and express often difficult feelings. I follow the protocol established by Linehan, however, enrollment in my group is on a rolling basis which means that you can join and leave at any time. Please call me for a complimentary consultation.

Counseling can offer an understanding of the behaviors, beliefs and emotions that fuel our daily interactions with families and other people. Therapy is a process. My job is to facilitate you through possible change options. It is my goal to work with you closely during therapy to aid in clarifying your goals for treatment, explore patterns and choices of communication, relationships, life style and foster development of beneficial coping strategies with commitment on both parts during therapy. The main goal is to explore patterns of behavior, thoughts, and actions to foster positive change and personal growth.

The Writing and Witnessing group explores spontaneous writing based on prompts, with no-response sharing from each willing member, along with a closing circle. The topics and content written about varies between members. The work in this group is to increase awareness of the sacred space of being a witness / being witnessed without positive or negative judgment, and assists us in increasing the skill of empathy and self-control as we listen to others without comment (verbal or sounds). This group is a rich experience for surprising one's self through content and compassion. Limit 10 participants.

In the values exploration group, we explore our own values, discover what drives us, and discuss/process how these show up in and impact our lives internally and externally in relationships. The group is facilitated by an Expressive Arts Therapist; therefore, multiple modalities may be used in each group session, including pair, group, and individual exercises, and always having in-circle verbal processing time together to open and close each session. Group runs when 4 or more participants commit to the 6 session series occurring every other week for 12 weeks, in early spring and late fall.

Many families come to therapy feeling like they have tried everything & are at a loss with how to help their child regulate their emotions & behaviors. I collaborate with caregivers to understand & manage their infant/toddler/young child's behaviors through developmental & relational frameworks which create positive change in family dynamics. I work with children (0-8 yrs) & their caregivers to promote secure attachment, bonding, and mutual enjoyment. I also work with individual adults, most of whom are struggling with perinatal mental health, stress, anxiety, emotion regulation, parenting, ADHD, & interpersonal trauma.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in Edmonds?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
