Contemplating that initial communication with a therapist is brave; the fact that you are reading this suggests that you have taken the first steps to making sense of feelings and experiences that are troubling you. Empathy and acceptance heals us. So I work in a warm, empathic, non-judgemental, empowering and boundaried way. You might feel deep-seated feelings of worthlessness, anxiety or shame. You might wonder why you seem to repeat the same old patterns in life. Or maybe you are at a cross-roads and don’t know where to turn. These are universal emotions that many of us feel. Over time, we build up defences and avoidances.

I offer psychoanalytically informed psychodynamic therapy (BACP) and am available for anyone who is struggling and is looking for some thoughtful company and support My role as therapist is to attend to the affective inner life of those seeking therapy and play a caring role in a liberation effort, both psychic and social. I am interested intoffering a non-judgemental space to rehearse disalienation, and accompany patients as they think and feel through their inner life. I believe that cycles can be broken, by paying attention to repetitions, inhibitions, and symptoms. As such I have worked with patients experiencing acute PTSD,

I’m a CBT and EMDR trauma-informed therapist with 20 years of experience across the NHS and private practice. I work privately with adults navigating anxiety, overwhelm, burnout, and the deeper patterns that don’t always shift with standard approaches alone. I have a particular focus on late-diagnosed adults and women with ADHD, where presentations are often tangled up with anxiety, burnout, emotional dysregulation, and long-standing relational patterns. I use schema-focused approaches alongside CBT and EMDR to work at a deeper level; not just managing symptoms, but understanding where they come from.

Hi, I'm Mary (she/her), I'm passionate about supporting people with anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and relationship issues. Is your mind constantly racing, worrying whether you said or did the right thing? Wondering if people like you? Did you make the right decision? Do you find yourself beating yourself up when you feel like you've got something wrong and find it hard to let go of things. Maybe you find it hard to stand up for yourself. Life can be so overwhelming sometimes we can feel like we don't want to be here. It's exhausting isn't it! I'm guessing you're here because you're fed up and want something to change. I can help you.

We all face emotional difficulties at some point that stop us from enjoying life as much as we would like. Talking to friends and family can be helpful, but sometimes this isn't possible or doesn't feel enough. Whether you're finding things challenging personally or in your relationship, or you have a sense that you could be more connected with yourself and others in your life, therapy can offer a unique opportunity to explore whatever is troubling you, and can help by providing you with support and understanding.

Feeling depressed, experiencing anxiety, struggling to adjust to certain life transitions, or seeking to understand how past experiences impact your current life may lead you to seek psychotherapy. The psychotherapeutic process is a journey that broadens one’s perspective on the self. The psychological symptoms and conflicts you feel are your psyche’s attempt to reach a resolution. What is truly healing in psychotherapy is the relationship itself; being seen forms the foundation of your recovery.

It may be that you want to discuss a current life event, or something that has been troubling you for some time. Being listened to with empathy and non-judgement can help you to deal with issues that are causing distress or unhappiness. The cause can be known or they maybe unknown. Relationships can get stuck in repetitive patterns. Issues that therapy can help with and that are often hard to overcome include: low self esteem, relationship issues , depression, childhood trauma, sexual issues, anxiety and stress . I also work with bereavement, loss, addiction and substance misuse , health related issues.

People start therapy for many different reasons. You may feel dissatisfied, worried or sad, want to explore the past, process difficult events, or achieve goals. By also using art-making, it is possible to explore emotional issues in a different, sometimes deeper way, one that words alone may not allow. You do not need to be an artist to benefit from this, just drawn to the idea of expressing yourself creatively. I have experience of helping with a range of issues, from common life problems, through depression, anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, and experiences of unstable mood.

I work from a humanistic-integrative, trauma-informed paradigm- some perspectives I draw from include dance/movement/body-oriented psychotherapy, relational intersubjectivity and interpersonal neurobiology. I can work with or without a diagnosis. I do not offer answers but a space to ponder and reflect on what you feel the need to bring.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
