My philosophy is Existential, meaning that we are free and therefore responsible for our choices, We are the authors of our lives, and we design the pathways we follow. My basic premise is that we are not victims of circumstance because, to a large extent, we are what we choose to be. Life is a cycle of transitions and experiences, presenting opportunities and challenges. Often the most important life lessons comes from our suffering. My aim is to assist people to develop their meaning and purpose, by encouraging them to explore options, in order to achieve a more meaningful existence.

My practice is informed by emotion-focused, mindfulness-based, existential, and relational approaches to therapy.
My work is rooted in a firm belief in each person's capacity to heal and grow. I aim to provide a space where you are supported in attending to this capacity within yourself as well as addressing what might be getting in the way. You might be struggling with self-judgment, navigating overwhelming emotions, feeling stuck in rigid patterns of thinking, or coping with a sense of disconnection. You might also be fostering intentions of being kinder to yourself, increasing self-understanding, or cultivating a greater sense of presence in your life and relationships. These are some of the intentions I most enjoy helping clients realize.

From one human to another –and as a climate-aware therapist– I create space to explore existential concerns and search for meaning.
Therapeutic alliance is one of the biggest factors of change–I encourage you to schedule a free consultation to see if we might be a good match and ask any questions you may have. My general approach to therapy is: identify the context and function of thoughts/emotions/behavior as they relate to your goals; practice noticing patterns in action; and from this place of recognition, start to tell a story aligned with your values. To suffer is human–but to grow and heal is also human. I offer evidence-based care with a focus on mindfulness, compassion-focused interventions, as well as on uncovering and elevating your existing strengths.

My experience and interests are based on the challenges of anxiety, depression, life change and existential crises, grief, stress, relationships, anger and supporting those who care for others.
Brown Counselling and Therapy Services is a group of qualified therapists who are passionate about working alongside you to provide the tools to help you navigate though life's ups and downs. As a person-centred counsellor, I believe an individual knows what path is best for themselves. Part of this journey is knowing one’s true self and envisioning their ideal self. When an individual can successfully merge these two concepts of self, they may find themselves more at peace.

Existential Counsellors

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
