Sometimes we are faced with challenges that can make it hard to live the life we want. In these difficult periods, therapy can provide an opportunity to connect with another person, explore the problems you may be facing, and figure out a path forward that works for you. My priority is creating a safe space between me and my clients, which means I approach every person and problem with respect, compassion, and without judgement. Regardless of how you feel right now, you (yes, you!) have strengths, expertise, and valuable experiences that I’m here to help you unearth, reclaim, or explore.

Burnout? It is so hard to feel happy and balanced when we’re caught in a people-pleasing merry-go-round and constant anxiety. People-pleasers who experience anxiety can often feel worthless and wonder who they can turn to. I help anxious people-pleasers struggling to manage their time and feel appreciated in their busy lives improve their relationships by finding a better appreciation for themselves. This is done by addressing past traumatic events and relationships and cultivating your strengths! Together, we can hold the space for your pain to open the door to happiness.

How is fear impacting your life? From problems that make you feel paralyzed, to uncomfortable feelings that are difficult to identify, trying to figure it out on your own can be confusing and scary. These feelings can hinder your enjoyment of daily life and future plans. By learning to understand how ADHD, anxiety, or trauma is affecting you, you can begin to see your life in a new way. I offer a nonjudgmental therapeutic lens where you can feel safe to explore your patterns and past. I created Dune Psychotherapy to be a collaborative practice, where we work together to move towards an authentic version of yourself.

Asking for help is the bravest step you can take and I want to help you make the most of this courageous step forward. I specialize in adult ADHD and postpartum mood disorders. As a fellow parent (of 3) I know how this time can bring great joy and simultaneously be the cause of overwhelm. If you have ADHD know that it does not define you, but it does impact your brain processes. To be the person deep in your heart, the work starts from the inside out. Together, we'll make sense of your pain, learn transformative skills, improve functioning and self-regulation.

Do you experience confusion and overwhelm when trying to express your feelings and advocate for your needs? Having a safe space to say your thoughts out loud helps to bring clarity to experiences. Whether you are working through a current stressor or an older relational wound, identifying your thoughts and feelings helps you gain insight and understanding, an essential precursor to change and healing. I work with clients to address longstanding automatic attachment patterns that may be maintaining beliefs and responses that are no longer helpful.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
