I see therapy as a creative, collaborative process. I am influenced by by the work of Carl Jung, and I have received post-graduate training in a diverse set of treatment modalities ( EMDR, IFS, ACT, CPT, PE, EFT). I enjoy using a unique blend of EMDR and IFS for deeper trauma work, but I am also comfortable with more traditional forms of talk therapy. For work with couples/families, I use a family systems approach and am well-suited to helping couple/family units navigate neurodivergence such as ADHD, highly sensitive people (HSP), BPD and Bipolar Disorder. I am open to and encourage discussing spirituality in our therapy sessions.

I draw from various approaches (Narrative, ACT, Existential, Mindfulness, EMDR) to create a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.
Some of life's problems are hard to solve alone. Maybe you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed and you know something needs to change, but you’re not sure how. Maybe you’re recognizing that you need focused support during this difficult time. Or maybe you're ready to shift a recurring pattern that seems to get in the way of living the life you want. Whether we focus on reducing stress, untangling painful emotions, increasing resilience, changing unhelpful patterns, or something else, I believe in your inherent capacity for growth and healing, and I offer a warm, judgement-free environment where you can feel understood and supported.

I offer Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing ( EMDR), an evidence-based practice, shown to effectively treat trauma.
I believe the most important relationship we’ll ever have is with ourselves. When we experience trauma, how we view our world, self & others, changes. Even after the trauma has passed, our minds make us believe we are still in danger which makes it difficult to feel calm. Trauma causes intrusive thoughts, cognitive distortions, flashbacks & nightmares, which can lead to depression, anxiety, avoidance & maladaptive coping strategies including substance misuse. Feeling overwhelmed & managing intense emotions can be difficult. If this sounds like you, I am interested in working with you to heal past wounds & regain a sense of control.

I draw from many theories such as EMDR, ACT, EFT, and narrative therapy.
My ideal clients range in age from adolescents through adulthood, including couples and families. They may have a past history of trauma or grief, or perhaps they are presently struggling with symptoms of ADHD, life changes, or a breakdown of a key relationship. They may be feeling completely overwhelmed and unsure where to go next. They will be open to trying new ideas to help them on the path to feeling better, but will not be worried about talking to me when certain strategies that do not work for them, as they will know it is best that we use techniques that they are comfortable with and will use.

Through the integration of EMDR, Somatic therapy and other evidence-based psychological modalities, I guide clients on a transformative journey.
When was the last time you experienced harmony with your core principles? At Hartwell Counselling, I provide a compassionate and transformative therapy rooted in evidence-based practices such as EMDR. EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and its the gold standard for treating and processing trauma. EMDR reduces trauma symptoms in a shorter time frame than the traditional talk therapy. Many clients have reported a reduction of traumatic symptoms after the initial few sessions of EMDR. EMDR is not a magic cure for trauma but it might produce some symptoms relief.

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
