Preferred Clinical Modalities: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Reality Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Psycho-education and others.
Dr. Gary "Skip" Ritter says he feels a connection when helping others develop insight to make positive changes in their lives. Skip believes that thoughts and feelings are the impetus that drive human behavior. His approach then to therapy is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Theory. In creating a paradigm shift from negative thoughts and feelings to increased positive thoughts and feelings, maladaptive behaviors often dissipate. Skip also believes that traumatic experiences exacerbate the lives of many of his clients and therefore, utilizes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

My approach is eclectic and client-centered, primarily Relational and based in Choice Theory/ Reality Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Polyvagal and others.
I am an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and my passion is to provide a safe space for both adolescents and adults, from all backgrounds, who are motivated to recover from all of life's stressors. I like to help clients learn how to acknowledge and process their past, but focus on their Here & Now, and what they want in their future. Tell me what you want, and we will figure out how to get there!

Her approach lies in the foundations of Psychoanalytic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Reality Therapy.
As a Licensed therapist, Ms. Barner is a creative and passionate mental health professional who believes that all individuals have the ability to learn and thrive successfully. Her therapeutic approach is confidential, supportive, and provides a safe place to talk about difficult things. She works on the belief that the person you are today is a combination of several factors. Some of these factors are early childhood and adult relationship experiences, genetic predisposition, and environmental factors. Her belief is that therapy is not a process that labels you, but an avenue that can help overcome life’s challenges.

My preferred theoretical approaches are EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), which look at the connection between thoughts, and feelings; Reality Therapy, Choice Theory, Existential, Trans-Personal models, and Behavior Modification.
The client will determine the outcomes, and I guide the client to solutions through the discovery of the client's own resources. Therapy will allow the client to overcome painful experiences; therapy will empower the client to achieve his/her own healing. Life events shape us into who we are, but when it hurts, we know something must be changed. Then, it becomes very important not to be alone in our perspectives or pain.Therapy is an ongoing process of change. Senderos (or pathways), means the exploration of new ways to have a happier life. I have been practicing as therapist for more than ten years.

I absolutely love trees! (made you look, lol). Seriously though, I do love trees & their similarities to us. They provide beauty, shade, healing, & support, all while remaining rooted. I view therapy as a branch of support, much like the sturdy limbs of a tree. Just as trees grow & change with the seasons, I believe therapy can help individuals & families navigate the various seasons of life, providing support & guidance along the way. For the past 25 years, I've specialized in working with children, adolescents & their families from diverse populations. It takes courage to seek support & strength to follow through.

Everyone has the capacity to heal no matter how profoundly wounded they are. Each individual's path to healing will be unique and for the best chance of long term recovery a person needs to find a healthy balance within their body, mind and spirit. It is my intention to help each client find the unique treatment team to help them achieve this balance. Additionally, I am experienced in affective, eating and personality disorders, substance abuse and trauma. I also understand how each of these interact with one another and can cause even more distress within each person.

As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LPCC) and military veteran, my focus is to serve other military veterans and their families. Although serving the military community is my primary focus, I am certainly open and available to others seeking guidance and support. Whether you are dealing with the stress of a recent deployment, transitioning out of the military, having separation anxiety, communication/relationship issues, or dealing with PTSD, there is no need to navigate these life struggles on your own. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness and counseling can help.

Reality Therapy

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviors. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
