I enjoy working with motivated-for-change individuals, whose goals involve exploring their areas of strength, and areas needing improvement, in order to live their most fulfilling lives. I work with adults who struggle with complex trauma, relationship concerns, anxiety, grief, life transitions, and identity and existential crises.

You are not broken, you do not need to be fixed, and you are enough. The circumstances you have faced and symptoms you experience are very real, but they do not define you. I strongly believe we as humans are resilient and capable of healing ourselves when we actively choose to. Through my years of working with survivors of trauma, I have found many symptoms, habits, and reactions to simply be adaptions; Ways in which the nervous system learned to cope with unsafe, chaotic, and/or unpredictable environments.

People seeking to become who they really are---that is, whole, balanced, resilient, contented---seek me out. I support kind, healthy, authentic relationship with all aspects of oneself because such relationship is key to kind, healthy, authentic relationships with others. It's also key to expressing ourselves most fully, both creatively and pragmatically. Whether working with individuals or couples, these principles apply. I try to make our work together as fun, co-creative, and as low in stress as possible. I intend for clients to leave therapy with personalized skills and skillful means for ongoing lifetime growth and resiliency.

I became a mental health counselor after many years working in student services in a university setting. I find (as the research continues to show) that the most important element of effective counseling is the connection between client and counselor—we will work collaboratively. I draw on many approaches including but not limited to client-centered, mindfulness, existential therapy, attachment theory, Buddhist psychology, solution-focused, trauma-informed, grief work, EMDR, and internal parts work.

Have you walked through life with ongoing and persistent questions that are ruminating in your mind? Do you feel stuck or confused? Do you consistently have symptoms and problems associated with depression, anxiety and sleep? Have you been through traumatic events that have changed your life plans? Have you suffered in turmoil from chronic substance use and compulsions or impulsivity? Are you in existential crisis? Do you fall into the same patterns of behavior over and over again? If any of these things have happened to you you’ve come to the right place.

Psychodynamic, Jungian, existential, IFS, and AEDP approaches give me a framework for listening and making sense of what I hear.
In psychotherapy, we work together to understand the meaning of your symptoms and the sources of your pain. The therapeutic process is in large part a careful encounter with the past in the hope of getting beyond what happened to you and discovering who you are apart from your history. It also includes the exploration of your beliefs, emotions, protective strategies, recurring patterns, and relationship dynamics. From a stance of compassion and curiosity, we put words to your experience and what has been unsayable before.

Please note that my practice is for adult New Yoke State residents only. I am a Japanese-born certified Jungian Analyst. Do you feel like you're not self-actualized? Do you feel like not being able to express your authentic self and true feelings, that are not dictated by others? My goal is to help you connect to your true feelings and self and lead a balanced life that is meaningful to you. I use Jungian dream analysis and active imagination primarily, but I also use other modalities such as Mindfulness-based or Existential psychotherapy at times.

I am a psychoanalytic and existential psychologist. I am best suited to working with people who are motivated to question themselves, highly open to exploration, and willing to tolerate ambiguity and forego ready-made advice. If you feel ready to do the "deep" work that you may have avoided in therapy before, we may be a good match. Please see my website at www.michaelmillerphd.com for more information.

I draw from relational, psychodynamic, CBT, mindfulness, existential, and somatic therapies - creating a collaborative approach that will best utilize the strengths that you already have.
Do you feel like your emotions control you? Life overwhelming? Maybe you're grieving or struggling with feelings of fear and loss. You can discover tools that will help you understand these emotions, as well as your strengths and you don't have to struggle with it on your own. Working with you, I will incorporate skills that I have gathered from my past experiences in public health, end-of-life care, gender-affirming care, and a Health at Every Size philosophy. If you have ever felt marginalized because of who you are, know that everyone deserves to find peace and affirmation and we can work together to achieve that.

I generally apply an existential approach.
Life is hard. There are so many challenges that can get us off track. Most challenges can be diminished if not overcome by closely examining them and seeing them from a different vantage point. We can work together to pinpoint what makes meaning in your life and use what motivates you to overcome or better traverse whatever problem may be that you are experiencing. With good communication and a solid understanding and grasp of who you are and what you want out of life, I don't believe there is any issue in life that we cannot work together to mitigate or overcome. I have flexible hours that include days and nights.

With close to three decades of human service experience and training in existential psychology, and clinical social work with a focus on trauma & resiliency, I would like to assist you on your unique path.
“What are we here for, if not for each other” ~ Siddiq. As a global crisis changes life as we know it, we are in uncharted territory. Discomfort, vulnerability, fear and anger are normal responses to an abnormal situation. You may be feeling alienated, anxious, isolated, frustrated, depressed, and stressed. Individually and as a society we are grieving the loss of what was “normal” as we adjust to the oft-mentioned “new normal”, and we do not yet know what the future holds. You may be grieving the loss of face-to-face social connection, a sense of safety, financial security, or—even worse—the loss of loved ones. You are not alone.

We use cognitive, existential, and behavioral approaches combined with mindfulness techniques.
I recently expanded my practice, adding two clinicians to better serve those looking for therapy. At Guiding Steps Psychotherapy, our mission is to help people heal from trauma and other adverse life experiences, anxiety, and depression. We work with survivors of sexual abuse/assault, those who have experienced traumatic loss from death or infidelity, individuals suffering from addiction, and others working through traumatic adjustments such as loss of a job or severe illness. I also counsel couples working to improve their relationships, those discerning their futures, and others contemplating separation or divorce

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
