An ideal client is someone who is willing and ready to work toward bettering herself/himself/themselves. The reality is that we all struggle to get to the point to take steps to work on ourself. Most of us are haunted by past experiences, child trauma, personal grief, self doubt, and insecurities. Sometimes, we are also dealing with mental health disorders such as Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Mood Disorders, and/or disruptive behaviors. All these while jiggling every day ups and downs that life throws our way. It is easier to help and support everybody else than feel vulnerable and let all that out.

Whether you're facing a new health challenge, the loss of someone close to you, or you are tired of old patterns that never seem to get better, therapy can be a step toward health and healing. I view therapy as a two-way street in which I use evidence-based strategies from ACT, CBT, narrative therapy, EMDR, and DBT, to help you reach your goals. Sessions include a balance of creating space for insights and engaging in targeted steps to reduce distress and reach your goals.

I work with individuals (adolescents and adults), couples, and families, who are experiencing a wide range of symptoms including infidelity, breakdowns in communication, high functioning Autism, trauma, sexual abuse issues, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and grief. My approach as a board certified art therapist is to use creative and sensory exploration to navigate deeper feelings when words are difficult to articulate. Art therapy is ageless; any age can benefit with no artistic skill required! Some challenges I help children process through include: anxiety, trauma, ADHD, school related issues, and divorce. I also offer the option of traditional talk therapy to work through parenting, pregnancy, anxiety, depression, and life changes. Parents talk through discipline, bonding, anger, and building trust with their kids. Tele-therapy is also available for Indiana and Illinois residents.

My ideal client would be someone who is geared towards helping themselves and needing guidance on how to do so. Someone who has a grasp on the importance of the client putting in the work to truly help heal themselves but needing assistance ensuring they are doing things in a healthy and emotionally intelligent fashion. Talk therapy is very important for clients who even just want to come and vent, which I believe helps the mind unclutter.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
