Is your child or adolescent struggling with anxiety? Or Anger issues? Or depression? Or oppositional defiance behaviors? I would love to help! I am only taking children/adolescents ages 6-18 currently. Children are our future. We are living in tough times right now. I would love the opportunity to work with your child or adolescent and help them navigate their emotions, learn emotion regulation skills, or distress tolerance skills. I think every person could benefit from learning these skills honestly. I want to invest my time into helping children so that they have more tools to handle stress, and to better manage their emotions.

I work with clients from adolescence to older adulthood with many concerns, but my "super power" is in working with older adults. I have worked with older adults in a variety of settings, including in-home, assisted living, and outpatient. Because my work encompasses a wealth of experience, the concerns and issues that are brought to session are normally varied, so I have learned to work with many different concerns in counseling so that your needs can be met during our time together.

Through a relationship built on trust, respect, and genuine positive regard we can look at life's situations in this present moment with understanding of what is important to you in order to gain new perspectives and counteract faulty logic. Together the counseling process becomes successful. Walking through life can be especially difficult for those who have been mistreated within relationships, those who are struggling to find hope after a loss, or those going through a rough time. May this be a stop on your journey, where you can develop flexibility in the counseling relationship, and can continue on this magnificent road.

The majority of my work with clients is focused on working with relationships. Whether it be a relationship with a significant other, a relationship with your immediate or extended family, or your relationship with yourself. Many concerns can be addressed by focusing on those relationships.

My typical client is wanting to heal from trauma, get rid of annoying triggers, learn calming techniques and coping skills to lessen anxiety and manage stress, lessen depression, improve communication skills and increase interpersonal effectiveness, learn assertiveness, learn distress tolerance, learn skills to practice mindfulness, develop emotional regulation, manage moods, develop resiliency and feel better overall. I also work with couples to restore their relationship. I am a trauma informed counselor, understand how trauma affects all parts of a person's life and know healing can happen.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
