Are you stuck and needing to process childhood trauma? Is your child sad, anxious or angry, and you know they need help? Do you feel like no one understands the challenges of creating a family (infertility, perinatal loss, miscarriage, IVF, adoption)? I shifted careers into mental health counseling in 2016 after 20 years of community advocacy to address injustice and empower women, children, and communities. I am a healing-centered, trauma-focused therapist now because I believe you - and your family - deserve guidance and support to reimagine and re-author your life narrative.

Children, adolescents, and parents experience unique joys and challenges. When children are feeling big emotions, it can sometimes look like anxiety, depression, physical aggression, and defiance. Adolescents are navigating their identities and social relationships. Parents are trying to balance their own needs with those of their families. Therapy is a place to access emotional support and skill building. I provide play therapy to support children, and utilize a more directive style to support adolescents, adults and parents. I provide a safe space that empowers clients to utilize their unique strengths, and I am LBGTQ+ affirming.

One of the biggest challenges people face is answering the overwhelming question: What comes next? Whether it’s trying to navigate a loss, career or life change, or the fear, anxiety and uncertainty of a changing and complex world, I feel called to walk along side people as they forge a path ahead. I love to collaborate with people and help them uncover their own inner wisdom. By helping individuals to learn new skills, they are better able to quiet the storm of emotions inside them and make better choices that bring them greater peace.

I have over 25 years experience doing therapy and evaluations for all ages. As a therapist, through compassion, listening, and active skill-building, I help individuals, couples and families increase understanding of issues and make changes needed to function better and feel better. While 25 years of experience guides my understanding of issues and my ability to help, in that time I have also developed a deep respect for the uniqueness of each person who comes to me, thus I approach each person with an eye to that uniqueness and how we can harness it to improve things.

If your child suffers from anxiety, depression, or challenging behaviors, or has experienced a traumatic event, it may be hard for you and your child to get through the day. You may worry about your child's future, or feel that you can’t be the parent you want to be when it's a battle just to get through basic daily activities. Individual play therapy, or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, can turn this around. Both are evidence-based treatments to help children learn how to handle their intense feelings and improve their relationships with others. I will involve you in the treatment process.

In the real world and with our loved ones, it can be hard to show up as our full selves. Our anxiety and depression tend to rob us from being present. When it comes to big decisions, it's hard to discern between fear and intuition. It is important to me that you find a space to feel heard and accepted without judgement. My practice is grounded in supportive listening, and centers you as the expert of your life. With a cultural humility approach, I commit to being sensitive to your unique experiences.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
