I am an experienced business professional that entered the field of marriage and family therapy to help others. I have been inspired to change careers to this path as my own life experience taught me about the importance of caring for my mental health to live my best life. As an African American, Queer woman I have worked through the struggles associated with identity, social pressure, the expectations of others, and the importance of building a family of choice.

I am an African-American, female, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
Seeking mental health treatment for yourself or your child can be an emotional and scary decision. Between finding the right provider who will listen to you, identifying what you want help with and then defining these goals, it can be overwhelming. My job is to make it as easy as possible through telehealth services that can be provided where you feel the most comfortable: your home. I look to help each of my clients cope with everyday life and hardships, identify any concerns that may be preventing or delaying your individual growth and help you work towards your goals.

I empower Black professionals with the tools and support needed to reclaim your confidence, overcome work stress, and navigate microaggressions.
Are you a stressed out and overworked professional woman of color, doubting your success and your place at the table? Have micro-aggressions or discrimination beaten down your workplace self-esteem, leading to anxiety and depressed mood? On paper, you’re qualified. But, for some reason, you find yourself questioning the smallest decision. You were excited when you got the offer letter, but now you feel inadequate and dread heading to work. Your self-doubt is constantly whispering, sometimes yelling, you aren’t good enough, you will never feel competent. Sound like you? Keep reading to learn how I can help.

As a Black, biracial psychologist, I am especially attuned to the multidimensionality of individuals and their layers of identity — including the identities that are socially-imposed and those that are self-affirmed.
Life is full of contradictions and complementary qualities. Making sense of the inconsistencies within others, ourselves, and our environments can be both challenging and enlightening. People are motivated to engage in therapy for a variety of reasons, including a desire for greater self-understanding, improved relationships, and practical guidance for managing intense feelings and difficult circumstances. Most of us will at some point feel burdened by emotional wounds, conflictual attachments (e.g., to people, striving, overconsumption, deprivation, habits of thinking and feeling that keep us stuck), and life stressors.

My clinical work is not only influenced by empirical research, but also by my experiences as a Black, first generation East African-American and Muslim woman.
Welcome to a space where you are seen, heard, and valued. I work with women who are experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, and issues related to relationships, friendships, career, life transitions, self esteem, perfectionism, burn out, people pleasing, and personal growth. Are you finding yourself struggling to manage your emotions lately? Are you feeling disconnected from yourself and those around you? If you find yourself self-sacrificing, feeling overwhelmed by the multiple roles you juggle, or just seeking to unpack some things, it might be time to consider therapy. Taking this first step is an act of self-love.

Overcoming an addiction is difficult even for the strongest of people. It is important to remember that addiction is a disease of the brain. Addiction is not a moral failing. You are not a bad or flawed person. However, the reality of most diseases, including addiction, is that they require ongoing care to manage. Being in recovery is a lifelong commitment that will not always come easy. Getting sober, or stopping the use of drugs and alcohol, is only the first step to sober living. Sober living requires making some lifestyle changes that promote personal growth and long term sobriety. I can help you start your journey.

You've done the hard work. The degrees and credentials on your wall prove that you know what you're doing, but for some reason, in the back of your mind you still have doubts. You know you're qualified for your position, but you find yourself feeling isolated and alone in your office. You feel pressured to keep going to work to make your family proud or provide for your family, but you feel overwhelmed. You've considered leaving and working somewhere else, but you really aren't sure what is the right move. All you know is that you want relief from the worry and stress. You want to flourish and feel at peace.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
