I do individual and couples therapy dealing with: addictions; defensive communication; sexuality; aggression; parenting, and money. *I find that most couples during arguments or stressful times, communicate poorly--are reactive and quick to blame. I really value helping the individuals develop themselves and their skills as a way out of this cycle, and towards a loving relationship. *In individual therapy we may deal with loneliness, anxiety, addictive patterns/substances or depression. We work together to set personal goals and on staying accountable. I focus on their maladaptive thoughts/feelings that can interfere with them retaking charge of their life.

Along with providing you with skills to thrive day-to-day, we will also uncover and explore unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so you can be more conscious of what's holding you back from being who you want to be. Unconscious dynamics are often influenced by our past experiences and relationships and can have visceral impacts in the present moment. My approach to therapy is characterized by a mixture of directness, playfulness, engagement, and nurturance. I believe that relentless curiosity and self-exploration leads to a sense of identity and purpose and an understanding of our place in the world.

Waitlist for new clients
My clients generally fall into two categories. Many clients are functioning just fine in many aspects of their lives but have some trauma/stress, relationship/employment, self esteem issues, substance use or mood/anxiety disorders that just keep them feeling stuck in an unhealthy pattern. There are also those whose lives are crashing down, with little hope that things can get better. There are no issues too big or too small that aren't worth exploring if they are causing distress. Clients come with baggage in search of a lighter load. That is what we work on together.

I treat several types of people: those with Depression (especially the treatment-resistant type); Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); Substance Use Disorder (SUD); and those engaged with existential considerations (meaning, purpose, drive). In many cases - even including those with SUD - the addition of Ketamine can bring about successful changes many have found elusive.

As a long time industry veteran, including years of being surrounded by highly dysfunctional behavior in recording studios, I understand the stress, hours, and pressure that creative people face. Whether its depression, abusive bosses, or creative blocks, we can work on unraveling the problems and getting through them. Similar to the "man behind the curtain" in the Wizard of Oz, there may be subconscious factors that are influencing your feelings, thoughts and decisions on a daily basis. Together we may be able to identify and neutralize any of these hidden or mysterious issues that appear to be holding you back.

I specialize in treating individuals who suffer from chronic, persistent depression or difficulty regulating emotions, and find themselves using substance abuse or other unhealthy behaviors to manage their symptoms. I join with my clients to uncover what is maintaining those unhealthy patterns and learn new skills to cope. I also work with clients to identify how developmental trauma from childhood influences their coping style, and help them develop self-compassion and acceptance as a part of healing.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
