I work with clients to treat anxiety disorders, depression, and bipolar disorders, as well as increase their ability to regulate emotions and replace impulsive behaviors with effective ones. I also help clients to identify their own intrinsic strengths and values. The effect is an ongoing flow of positive experiences, which help to build confidence, boost self-respect, and improve interpersonal relationships. I offer clients positive regard, non-judgmental stance, and a compassionate environment, where they can feel safe expressing their experiences, thoughts and feelings.

I believe that the capacity to thrive already lives in your hands, heart, and imagination. As your therapist, I will work with you to uncover your own inherent wisdom. With your wise self in the room, we can explore how parts of you may feel lost, unsure or left out. As your wise self learns to take up more space in your life, you may come to realize that the painful parts of you are just that: a part of you, and that your life is not defined by these parts. I will help you to realize that you are indeed amazing, capable, and loved.

You've spent so much time and energy worrying about food and your body. You often find yourself obsessing over every bite, and binge eating in secret has become a distressing pattern. The guilt and shame that follow only make you feel worse. You wonder, "Will this ever get better? Is this just my life now?" You're afraid to ask for help, fearing judgment or misunderstanding. Maybe you've tried opening up to someone before, but their response left you feeling even more isolated. You aren't alone, and you are not beyond help. I am a therapist specialized in addressing issues related to body image, disordered eating, and self-esteem.

Everyone wants to feel that they are good enough. The reality though, is that most of us struggle to feel that we are acceptable and lovable just as we are. If you resonate with this, you're not alone. These beliefs tend to operate in the background of your mind, subconsciously influencing your self-esteem, limiting the way you show up in relationships, work and leisure, and creating painful cycles of depression and anxiety. Therapy with me is a safe space to challenge patterns, expand limiting beliefs, heal your inner child, and develop a wise, confident, and secure authentic self to guide you through the ups and downs of life.

We are now in a communal health crisis together. It exacerbates feelings of anxiety and depression that we may have, and can make us spin as we try to adjust to Pandemic reality. Many of my clients are parents, people with career questions, immigrants, social justice workers. Many are either coping with a current situational issue that is confusing, overwhelming, or painful, or with a longer term pattern that they would like to change. I work in an engaged manner, hoping to build trust and a collaborative relationship that will allow you to look at old patterns and create new emotional and behavioral options, especially now.

It's not always easy to be a person. My job as a therapist is helping you figure out what works for you. I'm particularly good with clients who feel they don't fit the mold of societal expectations. I enjoy working with people who may be cautious about psychotherapy. My areas of expertise include relationship issues; depression and anxiety; chronic illness and disability; the impact of illness on couples and families.

I put an emphasis on the working relationship between client and clinician. This allows me to have a warm, interactive, strength-based and client-centered approach using a variety of modalities. In my work with youth, I also gained experience and insight into the patterns we fall into as children/young adults (based on a multitude of events or traumas in our lives) and how these can later have an effect on our adult selves. I believe that bringing awareness to these patterns and unpacking their origins can be incredibly helpful. I also bring a queer, feminist, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive/curious lens my work.

Sometimes life presents challenges that are too difficult to manage on one's own and therapy can be an excellent choice to address those obstacles. Therapy provides a conversation that is not available in any other relationship. I invite people to explore and clarify what they want and together we identify the barriers and create attainable goals. We will work together to understand what really matters to you. My treatment style is warm, direct, humorous and deeply respectful While each individual client requires something unique to them, in general, I offer practical solutions while also using an insight-orientated approach.

I’m Briana. I have spent time in shoes like yours and have a deep empathy for those who are on their journey to greater healing and understanding of themselves and their lives through therapy. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) which means I largely see you as a whole picture, a person that can be affected by many different factors in their environment, and how your issues can be correlated to other aspects of your life. I’m empathetic, but real. I’m a good listener, but I don’t think therapy should just be listening.

These are really tough times, aren't they? Existing issues feel bigger and it can be that much harder to cope. Therapy can heIp. I approach therapy in a warm and collaborative manner to help couples, individuals, and families identify new and adaptive ways to deal with life's challenges. In couples therapy, I use Emotion-Focused and Gottman approaches to help partners learn to manage and repair conflict, rebuild trust and intimacy, and build emotional connections. In family treatment, I'll work with your family to develop adaptive and healthy communication patterns, as well as address parenting concerns and behavioral issues.

How can I find a therapist in 94117?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
