This workshop uses the ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) model to teach small business owners and their employees how to increase psychological flexibility by cultivating: mindfulness, emotion regulation skills, values clarification skills, and ways to change your relationship to unworkable thoughts. My leadership style for this group is very hands on, creative and fun! Group can be held on the business premise if it is suitably quiet and confidential in order to accomodate for COVID concerns. Reach out to discuss details about time, day of the week, location and cost per session. I'm flexible!

I help young professionals change the way they relate to painful thoughts & emotions so they can live a life that is guided by their values rather than their fears. You might feel like life is mostly going okay. You might compare yourself to others and think “I shouldn’t be complaining” and yet you keep getting stuck in this painful cycle and you’re sick of it! You could be struggling with internal criticism, feeling directionless, unresolved feelings from the past or paralyzing anxiety about the future. If so, schedule a free 15 minute consultation now to learn more. I also specialize in treating OCD, hair pulling and skin picking.

Being a college student is hard work, especially if you are the first in your family to attend college. You may not have access to college educated individuals to shed light on the general experience, give you the tricks of the trade, or help normalize the self-doubt or disappointment that arises when things do not go the way you intended. This group is for first generation college students who feel isolated, stressed, or anxious. Join and connect with peers going through similar life experiences and develop tools to help you create the college experience you envision.

Navigating the high's and low's of our lives is hard work. It can be exacerbated by the painful feeling of being unworthy of love or belonging, the need to compare ourselves to our peers, or the belief that we must embody this “perfect persona” to keep our world from falling apart. You do your best to keep up but you ultimately end up feeling confused, defeated and ashamed. How is it that the harder you work the more you feel like an imposter in your professional and relational worlds?

In our work together, I'll seek to provide an atmosphere where you feel understood. With empathy and curiosity, my aim is to help you understand the ways you have struggled, and are struggling. Painful, yet unprocessed emotions are often at the root of our suffering. These emotions need care and attunement, a "relational home." By experiencing these emotions together in psychotherapy, you will likely gain significant inner freedom, as you understand yourself more deeply and experience a reduction in your symptoms.

One of the common threads to the people I have seen over the past 27+ years is their sense of shame. Shame messages are messages that say you're "worthless" and that you just "won't measure up." People who struggle with shame feel like something is wrong with them. It is probably the most painful of our feelings. I will help you resolve the roots that caused your shame. This is the engine that drives all kinds of self-esteem issues, addictive disorders, and mood disorders. I am a Certified EMDR Therapist.

Adolescence is a stressful time for both teenagers and their parents. Along with the many confusing physical and hormonal changes that accompany puberty, teens are becoming very independent. They are worrying more and more about their social standing and where they fit in with peers. Balancing daily life stressors, peer pressure, school and becoming a young adult can put them at risk for depression and anxiety. These factors can cause anxiety about things outside of their control. This 8-week Anxiety group for adolescent males, provides a safe space to process these topics and learn skills to overcome anxiety.

Treading water long enough can lead to exhaustion and the waves of life can often feel unsurmountable on your own. The loudness in our cultures and in our minds bring heavy burdens that can trap you and make you forget who you really are. It takes a great deal of courage to reach for something different. You have taken a huge step considering therapy. Choosing someone you can trust and feel the freedom to be authentic with, in order to explore some of the deepest parts of life, is important. I am passionate about helping you find this freedom and live authentically while embodying your truest nature, despite the waves that come.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in Texas?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
