It's not just you, life HAS gotten harder in the last few years. If you've been powering through, staying strong and carrying on, but now you're barely getting by and you're tired of feeling like you're not really living your life, it might be time for outside support. The benefit of therapy is that it's a time where you get to focus on yourself, to look at your life, and to get an outside perspective on how it could be different. You don't have to just endure, with the right support, you can heal from the past, and move forward towards a better future.

There are times in our life when it feels like nothing we do makes a difference. Problems become complicated by issues associated with our struggles managing mood or anxiety, feelings of shame, or coping with grief and loss. Situations such as transitions related to life stages, conflict or loss of connection in significant relationships, or changes in mental well being can be distressing and overwhelming. I work hard to build collaborative alliances with clients to co-construct different narratives about our relationship with problems, and develop alternative personal stories of strength, growth and recovery.

Change is difficult, even more so when it is not in your plan. During this unprecedented time of world change, you may be noticing your own emotional, physical and behavioural differences. These changes may be symptoms of present or past anxiety, depression or grief. If left unattended, these symptoms will eventually impact your relationships and overall well-being. You do not have to travel this unique journey on your own. I will provide a non-judgmental, caring and, hopeful environment. I strive for an authentic experience, for you to be heard and, ensure that you know your concerns are valued and understood.

Within my practice, I specialize in working with children and adolescents and adults, specifically adults looking for parenting support/coaching and mothers entering into the world of parenting (prenatal, pregnancy, postpartum). My therapeutic approach is an eclectic one, one that is flexible to the needs of my client. It is very important to know that therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach and therefore I find flexibility in my approach to be imperative. I offer therapeutic approaches in the realm of talk, art, and play therapy. I have training in a variety of therapeutic approaches making my approach flexible to your needs.

Why not consider giving yourself the gift of awareness, kindness and long-lasting change? I practice with respect, mindfulness and compassion. I value emotional memories and honour inner wisdom and strength. My goal is to work with you to alleviate distress and build resilience. I work in partnership with you to develop tools and the practical "know how" to meet the current challenges of your life with calmness and confidence. We will also explore how past experiences are shaping current responses and how your brain can be "retrained" to react differently.

People often enter into counselling in an effort to better understand and overcome personal struggles, problems and conflict. Our work together is aimed at removing the barriers that prevent you from experiencing the ease, love and balance you seek for yourself and others.

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
