You always told yourself that if you just worked hard enough, everything would be fine. As long as you never took any time for yourself, eventually, you’d be happy. But that hasn’t worked. You’ve accomplished a good career, a nice home, and a stable life. But there’s a feeling of emptiness and dissatisfaction you can’t shake. You frequently lose your temper with friends and family. Your significant other complains that you’re distracted and distant. Even the job you’ve always prioritized above all else is falling apart. You know these struggles go back to something from your past, but you don’t understand how.

As a clinical pastoral therapist, I am listening for themes and patterns - psychodynamic and spiritual - in your struggle. I sit with gifted individuals and couples to help them experience relief from the loneliness and destructive behaviors that arise from trauma and addiction. I work with survivors of many forms of abuse, moving with them when there seems no way out, to find a way through. We can discover freedom from anxiety, fear, anger, and self-hatred and release into grounded ways of living. I help people stop running from their pain and shame and start walking in peace to make consistent and conscious positive choices.

My passion is to work with individuals and couples to help them move past challenges and life-long obstacles to achieve incredible results that lead to a deep and lasting inner peace. I am here to use my 21 years of experience to help you reflect on your life, disrupt your comfortable routines, and challenge you to make positive changes. In other words, I help you wake up. But it is so easy to fall asleep to your life and put off dealing with longstanding issues that don’t have simple solutions. You let things go and focus on what is working. Eventually those neglected areas cause problems that you can no longer ignore.

My favorite all-time bumper sticker: Don't Believe Everything You Think! Obviously, everyone has problems in life, but both sages and scientists have discovered that how we think about our problems is a crucial variable in whether we grow through difficulties (past or present), or get mired in difficult emotions and unhelpful behavior patterns. While we all have unique histories and personalities, what leads to healing and change generally applies to all of us. But more than ever, we are living on "autopilot," and just trying to keep up. All the while, our busy minds provide a running commentary, often full of fear and criticism.

There are moments in life when we can hit an emotional road block. New challenges may present themselves that are difficult to overcome alone. Life can become either overwhelming or we can learn new coping strategies and overcome old wounds. These difficulties do not have to derail us. This is why I strive to help people return to a place where they can grow and flourish to their fullest potential. I believe in an integrated vision of the human person. As a psychologist, I seek healing that acknowledges the interdependent psychological, biological and spiritual aspects of my clients.

My clients are typically high achievers who may have found extraordinary success in many areas of their lives, but who: often feel inadequate; think they may be an impostor; are sick of self-help programs; don't seem to know peace or serenity; keep looking for happiness up ahead; recognize that their experiences don't match their passions; compromise their essential truth for the sake of appearances; aren't sure if they've found their unique purpose; create survival skills that then become new problems; strain to bring authentic connection to their relationships; and suffer the mental, emotional and physical pain of burnout.

Depression, anxiety, anger: sometimes our feelings can be confusing and overwhelming. Struggles at home and work increase when we're not sure how we feel or what to do with our feelings. Our relationships suffer, we don't feel happy and content, and we may wonder if there will ever be improvement. These feelings are often more intense for people who have experienced significant trauma or loss. Figuring out how to seek help and talk about these issues can be difficult. It's hard to know who to turn to, who to trust, and allow ourselves to imagine positive change. Sometimes it's hard to hope.

On the surface everything's great. You went through the motions, did what you were supposed to do- maybe some mistakes on the way- but overall you created a life that should be fulfilling. Yet, something is off. You can identify numerous wins and opportunities for gratitude, but it feels like an act. As a result, you shame yourself, you tell yourself you're not trying hard enough or something is broken inside of you and maybe you're not worthy of all you worked hard for. So you go into overdrive, or maybe pretend the feeling isn't there. But the feeling doesn't go away- it expands each day until you ask yourself, "Who even am I?"

I work with individuals and couples around helping change old maladaptive patterns and living in new places of growth. I believe that we have the capacity to break the cycle and live out of our authentic self but we sometimes get stuck. We long to be fully seen and known. The challenge comes in allowing ourselves to be known. My main specialty is are around trauma particularly Complex PTSD and from that anxiety, depression and addiction arises. I have received extensive specialized training in treating trauma and believe learning to sit with ourself is the greatest and most rewarding task in our life.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
