I specialize in supporting women navigating parenting, pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum stages often at the intersections of race, gender, cumulative grief and trauma, through a decolonial and humanistic lens.
Are you struggling to meet the demands of the day-to-day? On the surface everything is “fine” but underneath is there an inner critic that rails against you all day? As an Asian-American therapist who sees the therapeutic relationship as a powerful instrument of change, I see therapy as a sacred site to bear witness to and support the whole person lingering in and around the thresholds of life. It’s a space where you are seen and accepted for who you are, where we can safely untangle generational wounds, shame, perfectionism, internalized invisibility, and find the courage to explore, learn, and tend to the messiness of life.

I am a well-seasoned clinician and parenting teacher.
Are you feeling stuck? Do you need to drop into greater ease or “grounding”, but you keep getting “triggered” and respond in your old ways? Have you tried meditation or yoga, yet feel something is missing? Have you sensed true “flow” and playfulness in your interactions with others or within yourself, but, sadly, it is just not consistent? Educators, do seek being that teacher who moved you into this profession? Have you spent time learning how to develop your parenting and general relationship skills, but you keep reverting to prior patterns of reactivity? If so, try something new with me.

My current focus areas include life transitions, immigration, intercultural relationships, parenting, substance use, and the mental health of university students.
As a psychoanalyst with eleven years of clinical experience, I can work with you to analyze your life experiences and the unconscious determinations that may be keeping you stuck in some ideas and negative affects. An important aspect of my practice is creating a safe space where you can express yourself freely and work through your thoughts and feelings, while I actively listen, ask questions, and dialogue with you until unheard possibilities arise. Psychoanalysis shows us that words carry the extraordinary power to change not only symptoms but also bodies and perspectives.

Parenting Services for Families and After Adoption is a prevention-early intervention psychotherapy and educational practice for families with young children, both by birth and via adoption. Elaine Frank and Denise Rowe assist parents in getting to know their infants and toddler's personalities and ways of relating and communicating. The better one knows one's child, the more effective will be parenting strategies. Parent-child groups are a stimulating, enjoyable way to learn about aspects of the parent-child relationship, improve child and parent behavior, and learn about the 'ghosts' one brings from childhood to parenthood.

You are a concerned parent going through a divorce. Divorce wasn't part of the plan, but you also believe it's a necessary step. You’re ambitious and competent and used to handling everything on your own. Sure, you do get some help here and there, but mentally you keep it all together. Lately you’re finding yourself overthinking, stuck, and unsure of yourself. You’re revisiting memories of the relationship and trying your best to navigate co-parenting. To the outside world you have friends, family and a busy professional life, but on the inside you’re feeling overwhelmed and isolated.

If this resonates with you & your child, my goal will be to help you to better manage these really tough behaviors & help you both grow to enjoy one another's company more fully through the use of PCIT (Parent Child Interaction Therapy) and/or CPP (Child Parent Psychotherapy).
"It's not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, & to make your Happiness a priority. It's necessary." So often we put off the pursuit of therapy because of our busy schedules. If you, you & your partner and/or you & your child know that the time has come to care for yourselves, I'd be happy to support your doing so while working around school/work schedules, rush hour traffic, and after school activities. Like all of us, life and how I approach it shifted when the pandemic occurred. One positive takeaway for me has been being able to be a part of life-changing therapy in a way I hadn’t yet experienced, Telehealth.

While I have specialized training/experience in working with survivors of trauma and abuse, I also work with people dealing with a range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, life transitions, & parenting issues.
I aim to provide a warm, nonjudgmental, safe environment that will support your innate ability to heal and grow. I view therapy as a collaborative partnership between you and I, and I highly value building deep, genuine connections with the people with whom I work. Through connection, and a gentle balance of nurture and challenge, lasting change can occur. Many of my patients begin therapy feeling stuck, anxious, unhappy, struggling with effects of trauma or loss, or desiring deeper connections in their relationships. Therapy can help you understand more about yourself and what you can do to feel better.

Pregnant, postpartum, or parent of littles? Navigating the challenges of parenthood is not always made easier by the joys. Maybe you’re here as a mom struggling with all of the adjustments postpartum, you’re a dad feeling more irritable than you’d like, you’re crying or worrying a lot, having difficulty bonding with your baby, missing your independence, finding it hard to make time for your own needs, experienced a loss or scary birth, or you don't feel like yourself as an expectant parent, a new parent, or an experienced parent. We tend to have many expectations about parenthood and need help adjusting when things don’t go to plan.

You look in the mirror and see the "bad" traits. That you're not thin enough, not righteous enough, not "good" enough. You realize that these traits were projected there by someone else--a partner, or maybe even a parent. You want to recover from perhaps a lifetime of emotional pain and narcissistic abuse but you don't know where to begin...I specialize in treating adult children of narcissists, cult abuse/religious trauma survivors, and those struggling with disordered eating and body image issues. I can support you in developing your inner strengths so that when you look in the mirror it will be your true self staring back at you.

I have always believed that we are the masters of our destiny, and couldn't do the work I do without trusting that everyone is capable of change. One of the most exciting aspects of therapy is embracing that hope for yourself, your child, or family. Throughout my 30 years of experience, I have developed therapeutic approaches to empower clients and help them manage and overcome feelings of depression and anxiety, conflicted relationships, unhealthy behaviors and other stressors. As a family therapist, I work closely with families when treating children and adolescents, and offer guidance on parenting issues.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
