As a parent of three special-needs children, I have not only professional but personal experience with the enormous challenges of being a child or a parent in contemporary American society.
I specialize in working with children and adolescents ages 2 and up. I treat symptoms such as: separation-anxiety,enuresis/encopresis, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress-disorder, oppositional and disruptive behavior, attention deficits, school resistance, poor academic performance, difficulty with peer relations, gender dysphoria and conflicts around sexual orientation. While I work with children individually, I also regularly involve parents. I aim to position myself as a support person for everyone in the family, particularly parents, knowing that the emotional well-being of children is entwined with the emotional well-being of the people who care for them.

Are you worried about your child's development? Is he/she struggling in social, emotional and/or academic areas? Is discipline a problem? I am a Psychologist with 25 years of experience in helping children and families flourish and I am confident that I can help. Parenting is probably the most challenging thing we will ever do and there is no "how to" book that could possibly cover the complexity of situations that arise. When our children struggle to meet the demands of our world, assistance may be needed.

A Chinese proverb reminds us, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." It may take courage to take that first step - to contact a therapist. I am an experienced, caring, knowledgeable Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I view psychotherapy as a collaborative process, in which the therapist and client work together toward the client's goals. I help clients examine and understand their past, their thinking, their feelings, their options. I can provide support and empowerment to help you address your issues and struggles, whatever they may be.

My areas of specialized training and interest include trauma, relationships, identity development, emerging adulthood, parenting , with a sub-specialty in complex trauma.
Therapy can be a beautiful journey of healing, empowerment, and growth, but starting that journey can be difficult and takes a lot of courage. Many people have found themselves in a place they did not expect prior to the pandemic. Therapy can be a space to pause and navigate life’s challenges with the support of another. As a therapist, I believe that building a strong therapeutic relationship is key in creating a safe and accepting environment from which you can heal and grow. I prioritize relief from the pain that has brought you to this moment, but I also believe that true healing comes from deeper understanding of experiences.

As the parent of a child with autism, I have developed tools to help special needs parents not only survive, but thrive.
Psychotherapy helps you see yourself, and your world, in a new way. I am passionate about helping my clients to discover what make them feel truly alive, and I view my role as helping clients to identify the ideas or relationships that stifle that power. My style is compassionate and interactive, fully appreciating the courage it takes to engage in psychotherapy, while helping you make room for new possibilities to unfold. I look forward to working with you!

To live full, free, and generous lives, we need to connect deeply with ourselves and with others. I gently encourage clients to develop confidence in their inner knowledge and to have faith in the flow of the universe. When we trust our feelings, our intuition, and our creativity, we don't feel impelled to muscle through the world. Instead, we feel guided and supported. I help clients to rely on their inner knowledge and to express their vulnerabilities and strengths so that they can fulfill their potential, interact meaningfully with others, enjoy life's riches, and do the work they are meant to do.

Much of my success in working with children has come from my ability to effectively establish a strong therapeutic relationship. I give them a safe place in which they can effectively express their feelings. Boundaries are extremely important in this process. My patients know that what they say in my office stays in my office. I work collaterally with the family to help address the child's needs, without violating their trust or the boundaries we have established.

At this unprecedented moment, you may be feeling intense anxiety and are unsure where to turn. I will give you connection, warmth, humor, and insight as I help you navigate this period in your life. The key to any successful treatment is a safe, trusting, compassionate relationship between the therapist and client- this is our first goal. Often our most intimate relationships play out problems that we encounter again and again. Together we will examine connections between your past and present, and ways in which current behaviors can be modified in order to have more successful and fulfilling relationships- our long term goal.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
