Even when we have received the ideal nurturing, secure, validating childhood, which can help us to negotiate complexities and challenges we may face later in life, our inner resources can become depleted. The capacity to find joy and comfort may elude us. Rebalancing areas of outer life, and planning steps toward change may be in order. I make time to learn about the myriad ways that using art, energetic, somatic and stress reducing therapies can help each person who comes in, to restore their inner lives as well.

Let's say you've come to me to ask for help, for you or your child. I would say, "Have you tried making art about it?" Don't get bogged down by any worry about art-making skills or ability. I aim to find the most comfortable way for you or your child to share because a safe and therapeutic space to express yourself will help uncover unexpected solutions for yourself and your child. Because sometimes words just don't cut it.

I've received extensive post graduate training in treatments I believe in and have seen be effective. Research shows that therapy success of treatment is built on fostering a supportive relationship between client and therapist. We are all much more simply human than otherwise (Harry Stack Sullivan). I believe that one finds mental health in meaningful, connected relationships with others-our parents, partners, children, friends, siblings, and therapists. I bring warmth, humor, and honesty into my therapeutic work, and act as a support and guide as you work to improve areas of your life that you are inspired to change. I focus on growth and reparation, not pathology. I have a broad range of experience with all ages and ranges of problems, and can offer comprehensive treatment to children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups.

Have you ever been asked, ‘Are you okay?’ and felt like your world was about to come crashing down just by hearing those three words? Emotions can be overwhelming. They are even more overwhelming if we try to deal with them alone. These overwhelming feelings may result from trauma, relationship troubles, stress from work or school, major life transitions, unconscious beliefs, etc. However, no matter what we may have experienced, we all have an innate ability to grow, change, and thrive. I work mainly with adolescent and young adult populations with a focus on anxiety, depression, and self-esteem.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
