I am a Black, male therapist originally from Columbus, OH. and now living in Raleigh, NC. I find it a great honor counseling with clients who are just dealing with life's many transitions to doing therapy with those clients that are facing challenging diagnosable mental health issues. I mainly utilize therapeutic techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (e.g. Ellis’s ABC model, thought journaling, cognitive restructuring, etc.) but I also use techniques from Solution Focused Therapy, EFT, DBT and Multisystemic Therapy. I have found that I prefer a person-centered approach, though I will still use goals, contracts and homework.

**Accepting New Clients** Life can be overwhelming, confusing, disappointing, and painful. Life can be very fast-paced, and it can be very difficult in knowing how to keep up. If you’re feeling depressed, or having difficulty with friendships/relationships/family/job, therapy can help. Are the experiences earlier in your life (childhood and/or early adulthood) impacting you now? Is it difficult to make healthy choices? Do you have anger issues? Do you struggle to share emotions that are natural and more vulnerable? Therapy can aid a person in making healthy choices, and improve your daily decision-making.

Have you reached adulthood but don’t have the sense of belonging or fulfillment you thought was supposed to come with it? Something so basic has been missing for so long you feel stuck and embarrassed to talk about it. You are not alone. 1 in 10 men will experience anxiety or depression but less than half will seek treatment. Life can be a hell of a thing but as men the expectation is to just deal with it. Maybe you are just entering into the adult world and realize you will be making decisions that will forever alter the course of your life and want a no pressure place to talk about it.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and AAMFT Approved Supervisor. My desire to help others build strong, resilient families came from my own experiences as a husband, father of six and soldier. During my twenty years in the Army, I deployed 6 times-5 combat tours and 1 peace keeping mission. As a result I had to learn how to navigate life's transitions, manage stress and anxiety, overcome trauma and all the while leading my family through it. My desire is to help others do the same by providing a place to work through and overcome their challenges in life.

From Inflation to war; mass shootings to racial injustice, It seems that the list of problems are endless. Combine those issues with family drama, church hurt, marriage conflict, and challenges at work...well, you my friend have a recipe for an implosion! You've seen the signs, that's why you're here. The irritability, ghosting, distance from family and friends, racing thoughts, anxiousness. You know that you have to do something before you explode!

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
