As a 5th-generation Montanan, I have experienced the value of deep roots and being connected to a place, a people, and a story. I believe relationships are at the heart of every story, and am passionate about helping individuals, families, and children reconnect with others and reconnect with themselves to make sense of their past, present, and future. I have training in individual therapy for adults and minors, couples therapy, and family systems. Whether working with adults, children, or families, I believe relationships are the mechanism for healing and that my relationship with my clients is a starting point for change.

Hi! I am currently seeing clients in person in Helena and providing telehealth across Western Montana. I am a relationship-oriented therapist striving to accept clients unconditionally wherever they are at in life. I believe (and research supports) therapy works best when client and therapist work together toward understanding the origins of dissatisfaction and finding freedom to truly be oneself. This process makes possible change that enhances the relationship with oneself and with others. I work with clients to develop greater openness to experience and greater capacity for the complexity of a richly lived life.

The struggle is real- for all of us. I am committed to helping a person grow toward improved insights and coping skills to resolve their problems and related emotions, in a non-judgmental and supportive manner. My goal is for one to learn more about themselves and to function at a higher level in the whole-person dimensions of their life. Whether one is motivated for short-term and situational concerns, or more internally motivated for deeper understanding of self and life-stage fulfillment, the counselor/ client relationship remains paramount as an agent of change.

I am dedicated to providing help for the hurting, in a safe and compassionate environment. We all have times when we could use a little help, but change is possible and can lead to a great life. I combine evidence-based, cutting-edge therapies intended to bring healing to the brain. These include LENs Neurofeedback, EMDR (I am an approved consultant), and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. As a 25-year military veteran, I have a solid understanding of issues experienced by military and veteran clients and their families, and a deep desire to provide veterans and first-responders with help.

In therapy I don't just help people walk through their struggles, I help them discover what those problems are, and where they came from. In the office, I use psychodynamic, existential, and relational approaches to understand both why folks want to change, and why they haven't been able to, fully honoring that reluctance in order to make therapy enduring and empowering, ages 3 through 93, for families, couples, and individuals.

I approach every client with concern for immediate difficulties and symptoms, but also believe that one of the central tasks of therapy is to gain self knowledge and understanding. This might include acknowledging emotion, understanding avoidance, and identifying behavioral and relationship patterns. Research studies have demonstrated that focusing on relationships (past and present) increases the likelihood that therapeutic work will be effective.

I work primarily with adults and older teens struggling with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, grief, trauma, life transitions, and just trying to understand and make sense of their lives. I have experience working in eating disorder treatment as well as college counseling. While I am guided by a variety of approaches, including psychodynamic, attachment, existential, and mindfulness theories, the heart of my work is the attitude that healing comes through connection and that we move through difficult times by learning to continually open up to experience.

At one time or another most people feel stuck in unproductive or even damaging ways of thinking, feeling, perceiving and acting/ interacting. Sometimes the causes of the difficulty are hard to see or define. Other times we may understand why we struggle but lack the skills or support needed to make and sustain change.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
