As your therapist, you can expect candid and intentional interactions from me while holding space around culturally sensitive and difficult discussions.
We are constantly impacted by our environment from family, friends, communities, and institutions and we are impacted with the relationships we have with each of these systems. We can internalize these interactions which makes it difficult to cope. I utilize a systems theory approach that highlights strengths-based, solution-focused, and trauma-informed practices. I lean into a decolonized and relational approach to the work we do together. My hope is to better understand these dynamics alongside with you and assist you to understand how to overcome the stressors and barriers attached.

I want to be able to offer an empathetic, nonjudgmental, and safe space for you to process your thoughts and feelings, adding a bit of humor along the way. I want to be along side with you, to help you see your own strength, and work collaboratively with you to help cope with the daily hurdles of life.

I am an LGBTQ+ ally, culturally sensitive, body and sex positive.
It's a crap shoot trying to choose a therapist, and you’ve been through this before. You've gone to therapy but felt like the counselor didn't get you, or you're looking for more depth and a different perspective to address low mood, anxiety, self image, grief, boundaries, relationship with food and your body, or life transitions and transformations. Maybe you're wondering why relationships feel unsatisfying and you'd like to cultivate more pleasurable experiences and interactions. Perhaps you’re seeking a sense of alignment and cohesiveness between thoughts and feelings.

I work with women experiencing stress, anxiety, body image issues, low self-esteem, issues with boundaries, relationship issues, and symptoms of depression. I acknowledge these moments are mind consuming and call for verbal processing and skill building. I meet each client where they are in their process and support them as they connect with their most authentic self.

Life is ever changing, and with change can bring a plethora of other emotions including stress, depression and anxiety. It takes strength to seek help when we are feeling most vulnerable. I aim to create a safe, warm, and supportive connection with another person and use that connection to cultivate change. I’d like to help you become empowered to accomplish your own goals and to take control of your life. All transitions are difficult, whether it is anticipated or unexpected change. As adults, we have many responsibilities to uphold. This can include career, relationships, and family, emotional and physical health.

Your relationship with yourself is your most valuable asset when building relationships with others. This relationship with self also serves as a compass when exploring different parts of yourself such as sexuality, attachment, and experiences of harm. Many of us struggle with this primary relationship, which complicates concerns we may have around our sexual and relational lives. Exploring sex and relationships can be a disorienting and overwhelming experience. It is important to find spaces that feel comfortable and empowering while sifting through the many layers that impact sexual and relational health and functioning.

I believe in the healing power of a therapeutic relationship where you can be the real you. No judgment or criticism here. Maybe you want to break free from unhealthy patterns, work through issues that have been swept under the rug, or find wholeness. Perhaps life isn't going quite the way you'd hoped or expected. Maybe you long to be secure in who you are and embrace all parts of yourself, to move away from self-criticism and toward self-compassion.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
