The therapeutic encounter is a unique collaborative journey. We cannot control what crosses our path, but we can see ourselves as brave enough to face it. People come to me when they are in struggling or stuck and want to improve their life, hope and relationships. I provide a safe space to explore issues with food, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, self-worth, loss and creativity. I love to work with couples using Emotion Focused Therapy. I am insight minded. I can help you face fears, own longings, repair hurt, deepen connection, renew dreams. I can hold your story. I am trauma-informed. I won't shy away from the hard stuff.

It is complicated to chose a therapist from such a long list of possibilities. It is equally challenging to tell you about my work in a few short paragraphs! Nevertheless, here I go: I can help with anxiety, depression, grief, lack of direction, life transitions - marriage, divorce, life threatening illness, empty nest - as well as early trauma, spiritual crisis and sexuality issues. I also specialize in the integration of psychedelic experiences and hold a Certificate in Psychedelic Therapy and Research from CIIS. I am fairly interactive and I maintain a sense of humor, even in the midst of very difficult situations.

I am primarily a CBT therapist, though I also have formal training in humanistic and psychodynamic approaches.
I am a Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I lead an internationally recognized team investigating anxiety, depression, and trauma-related disorders. I ascribe to a clinical science model, in which my research informs my practice and my practice informs my research. Additionally, I train and supervise Berkeley PhD students as they learn to provide therapy. As a therapist, I have two decades of expertise treating patients with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and emotion regulation problems. I also have extensive experience working with daily stress, social and interpersonal relationships, and couples.

While the style of therapy I practice draws on multiple theories, my foundation is Humanistic and Existential.
I hold to the belief that all people have the potential to achieve healing and growth. As a practitioner, I take a supportive role as clients determine and strive towards their mental and emotional health goals. I believe my empathy and my non-judgmental, conversational style help form productive therapeutic relationships. In this safe place, difficult issues can be explored. I’m comfortable supporting people from varied age, sexual orientation and genders as well as diverse ethic and cultural backgrounds. I feel passionate about supporting people from groups that have been marginalized in Western society. My pronouns are She/Her

I am proficient in the use of EMDR, clinical hypnosis, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and the Humanistic-Existential paradigms.
There is nothing quite like emotional pain. We carry it with us everywhere. It messes up our life. Sometimes it makes us want to hide from other people; sometimes from ourselves. Sometimes we turn to various escapes to quiet that insistent feeling in our bodies. We look to one solution after another until we learn to mistrust every solution. And we are right. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. In fact, there isn't even a one-size-fits-all question. You are unique, and only you have the answer. My role is to help you find it.

I am a licensed psychologist. I see both children and adults in my private practice. My work with children and adults utilizes our human ability to express ourselves through imagery in art, play, imagination, and dreams in ways that catalyzes healing and inner transformation. With children my work includes collateral sessions with their parents. With adults I also draw on my many years of spiritual practice, using such techniques as mindfulness and Yoga Nidra with my clients.

I believe the mind knows how to heal. Given the right conditions, our own wisdom guides us back to what makes us feel alive and whole. Therapy can be one of the conditions we need for healing. By becoming familiar with what blocks us and aligning with what we value and love, we begin to untangle the past and create the life we want.

People come to see me to talk about what's going on in their minds, their spirits, their lives. I work with people on whatever level they wish. For some of you, this is about finding a way to communicate with other people. For some, this is about managing your own emotions such as anger or fear or sadness, or dreams or nightmares, or traumatic stress, or cravings and triggers. Some people want to develop pathways to successful personal change. Some want to dig deeply into their minds, even into their consciousnesses. I can walk with you on your journey into yourself. Even the children of dedicated, responsible parents can develop behavioral or emotional problems as they move through childhood and adolescence. Sometimes the acting out or other worrisome behaviors occur only at home. Other times, the difficulties erupt at school. Or both. Perhaps what you or the school has tried isn't working. You may be blaming yourself even though it is not your fault. At these times, an experienced child therapist can help you and your family get back on track.

Has something difficult or disturbing happened in the past or present that is currently affecting your relationships and personal life? I believe that difficulties provide pathways into a deeper understanding and relationship with oneself. No matter how challenging the circumstances may seem, I believe it is possible to navigate through the situation and gain relief. I consider it a privilege to work deeply with people building supportive collaborative relationships while attending to the difficulties they face. I am currently licensed in California and Idaho.

This human journey is dynamic and asks so much of us at times. Many of us find ourselves struggling internally or in our relationships and it is these moments that I am here for you. Like most of us, I imagine you want freedom from inner oppressive paradigms, an ability to cultivate and utilize resources that help you navigate swift currents or unknown terrain, and perhaps above all to be deeply understood.

I describe my approach as informal and professional. I believe that the heart of good individual therapy is the relationship between the therapist and client. The most common complaint I hear from my clients about other therapists is either that they are a blank screen or they are overly focused on one perspective. Not me. I work with you to develop a plan. I am actively engaged, helping you learn how to help yourself. I also look at how various identities you may have (gender, racial, etc) impact on you and the issues you want to work on. When working with couples, I use an evidence-based approach focused on the present.

Namaste! Have you ever been told, "You're too sensitive. Get over it, move on!" Do you process events deeply, noticing nuances? Do you have strong emotions of anger, sadness, guilt, worry? Do other people's moods affect you? At times is your environment too loud, bright, or overstimulating? Have you used sex, relationships, food, shopping, etc. as a way to self-soothe to the point of over-indulgence or addiction? You may be a Highly Sensitive Person or HSP. HSPs can have higher rates of anxiety, depression and overwhelm. By developing skills like self-compassion, mind/body /spirit connection, you can thrive rather than just survive.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
