Healing involves the whole person, not just the problems that person is struggling with. I believe that depression and anxiety are not random occurrences but have meaning. It is our task to discover the message contained within the pain. The sense of separateness that comes from this pain is often a separation from the self. As a trained homeopath, as well as a psychodynamic therapist, I have tools to treat both psychological and physical symptoms. I am faculty emeritus at the Women's Therapy Center and am a supervisor and instructor at The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley. I have also taught at Sonoma State University.

I offer support to survivors of traumatic experiences, individuals who have experienced a loss or separation from a loved one, as well as those suffering from depression and anxiety. Emotional pain is as common as physical pain, and can be truly agonizing.

I am passionate about working with individuals and couples who desire more vitality, depth and richness in their lives and relationships. My work focuses on helping you liberate your unique self by working with patterns that keep you stuck or suffering; and then to transform these patterns by evoking a deep embodied presence in you. We will work collaboratively in a supportive, empathic environment using imagination and creativity to help you deeply be yourself and experience your life in new ways! In couples, working on these individual patterns together can transform the relationship.

This human journey is dynamic and asks so much of us at times. Many of us find ourselves struggling internally or in our relationships and it is these moments that I am here for you. Like most of us, I imagine you want freedom from inner oppressive paradigms, an ability to cultivate and utilize resources that help you navigate swift currents or unknown terrain, and perhaps above all to be deeply understood.

I provide guidance towards building trust and balance, by forming a growing alliance with you. Together, we find a pathway to renew your mind/body/spirit connection. We access your inner resources, to create a unified sense of self. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, fear, isolation, anger, trauma, we pay attention to these signals. We meet vulnerability with a gentle rhythm, so the heart can release these emotions. Our intent is to nurture a relationship to yourself, based on self acceptance, honor and respect. Our focus is to create a feeling of safety within yourself, security in the world, and an opening to wholeness.

Hi I’m Chaela, owner of Connecting Couples Therapy. I work with couples and individuals in various degrees of relationship distress and I help them develop a more secure attachment style. I love helping clients find real ways of connecting more deeply and authentically in order to live a more fulfilling and satisfying life. During times of stress, unmet needs can bring out the worst in a person. I help couples to recognize the root of relational insecurity and to develop security both internally and interpersonally. I also work with couples on the brink of or in the process of divorce to create secure coparenting practices.

I believe that therapy can offer insight, understanding and actionable steps by using self-awareness, acceptance and tools to better our lives. I often work with pre-teens, teens, young adults, families and individuals in creating a safe space to explore challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss, career/identity issues, life adjustments, relational challenges and parenting struggles.

I believe that people suffer in their own habitual way, whether you are an individual, couple or family. We are unaware of the ways we are separated from ourselves, what we feel and how to live more fully in relationship to ourselves, our loved ones and the world. Careful attentive listening and active engagement are some of the ways I help people know themselves and support their making changes in how they live. I have deep belief and relationship with the unconscious, using dreamwork, active imagination and creative processes to facilitate change. Therapy provides the opportunity to make changes and feel more alive.

REST YOUR MIND -OPEN YOUR HEART For over 25 years I have been both a LMFT and a Buddhist meditation teacher (see OccidentalLagunaSangha.org), but I work with clients of all beliefs. I bring mindfulness practices, focusing therapy, depth psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy and lots of life experience to my work with clients. Clients often bring depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and life transitions to our work. Together with empathy and compassion we explore what cuts us off from being more fully present with our lives.

How can I find a therapist in Sonoma County?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
