My background includes a Masters degree in Art Therapy, over 1000 hours of study in Yoga, meditation, addiction and recovery coaching, and a deep background in the expressive arts.
Art Therapy sessions give your child a space to TRULY be themselves. Whether your child needs a space to process difficult life situations, freedom to be uniquely themselves, or wildly creative, I will offer them a safe and open-minded space to do so. We can learn ways to manage stress, fear, and other challenging emotions that are appropriate for their developmental level. They will have access to a wide variety of art materials and the ability to integrate drumming, play, and other expressive modalities depending on their (and parent supported) therapeutic goals.

My background in expressive arts therapies and play therapy allows me to draw on multiple therapeutic practices and offer an eclectic approach to your care.
Are you looking for support in managing your child's emotional needs? Are you seeking something other than traditional forms of talk therapy? As a provider, my goal is to build a safe emotional connection with all my clients, learn who they are, enter into their world, and provide them with the tools to help navigate it. Play is how a child navigates the world, and therefore play is how coping skills are delivered; in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

If you are anxious, having difficulty with relationships, depression, self-esteem, or wrestling with an addiction & would like help, let's talk. I have been a psychotherapist for thirty years, and work with children, adolescents, and adults. How long ago did your issue begin? Many people don’t know the root cause of their problem. You may be suffering in silence not knowing where to turn. Counseling can provide tools for surviving the emotional fall out from COVID-19, building happy, healthy relationships, managing stress & anxiety, appreciating your strengths, & feeling good about yourself.

Whether you are coming to therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, a life change, or just a general sense of unease, facing these issues can be scary. Healing isn’t easy because it involves confronting our pain and hurts. Healing can also be full of joy, hope, connection, and freedom as we experience new possibilities of being and relating. My approach is warm, relational, and integrative. I strive to offer a space where you can feel safe enough to look inward – to gently and compassionately welcome all parts of yourself with less judgment and shame.

My practice combines compassion and creativity to connect with individuals and families. It is through this connection that I will guide one through life's challenges and assist individuals and families in discovering and focusing on one's strengths and potential for growth. My own experiences, as a parent of a special needs child, have enriched my work as a therapist and helped me gain a richer understanding of the importance of a strong support system. Therefore, I strongly believe in working hard to help individuals and families feel supported during the various joys and adversities of life.

Mental health can mirror physical health: we can get regular check-ups, therapy when we get injured, and sometimes be prescribed medication when therapy or lifestyle changes aren’t enough. Whether it’s stress management, anxiety, depression, family dynamics, autism, communication skills, or general coping skill development, I strive to support you through your therapeutic journey towards goals we develop collaboratively.

Starting from building this foundation, I can offer a variety of paths from there, including but not limited to CBT and DBT skills, grounding and mindfulness practice, addressing, depression, anxiety, general mood concerns, & more, or just a safe space. Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
