Spoiler alert: Addiction, codependence, depression/anxiety, perfectionism, material striving, control issues, and self-criticism etc.
“Trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth.” – Alan Watts. Sounds pretty pointless and dumb to me (and probably to dentists everywhere). Attempting to work on yourself alone only takes you so far and really drags out the Suffer-Fest. That’s what therapy is all about; an unbiased, collaborative relationship, preferably with someone who actually gives a shit (me, hi), that can help you to understand and accept yourself fully.

I work with clients who are struggling with substance abuse, addiction, anxiety, depression, anger, identity, and transition.
Seeking counseling can be a difficult first step. It's hard for us to acknowledge our pain, and often we feel guilty about it. Feelings aren't good or bad, they just are--the consequences of those feelings are what we can influence. Counseling is important because it can provide a safe place to speak the truth about what we are going through. Our truth is powerful and can be a motivator for making changes to how we feel and what we do. Counseling can help us identify our values, goals, & beliefs and to harness them to help us heal.

Low self-esteem, anxiety, addiction, and depression impact how we show up in our work and relationships, inhibiting our ability to reach our fullest potential. Sometimes we can feel too vulnerable talking to our friends and family about feelings of shame and guilt. Therapy is not only a safe, nonjudgemental space for expressing your concerns, but also an alliance that fosters positive change. Through unpacking the words of your inner critics, you have the opportunity to find your true self and experience self forgiveness, confidence, love, and acceptance.

I specialize in substance use disorder, PTSD/EMDR therapy, LGBTQIA populations, and those that are experiencing anxiety, depression, and general stress.
When it comes to therapy, I try to make the process as applicable as possible for the client in order to make them feel comfortable. A lot of the clients I see are working on difficult transitions in life, such as grief and loss, coping with stress from daily life, or working through their past. The clients I see are all motivated to not let their past, daily stressors, or negative habits define who they are! We will work through these issues in order to gain awareness, generate acceptance, and then take appropriate action in order to get the most out of life. I will go at your pace to allow for both comfort and development.

I have experience working with adults and adolescents who struggle with mental health as well as addiction.
Everyone experiences difficulties in life and there is no time like the present to find help supporting the emotional weight you may be feeling. Whether it is the pandemic, the economy, or your personal experiences, external situations can have a serious impact on your internal self. By working as a team, my goal is to help you explore the reasons why you have these negative emotions and begin the process of lessening the impact they are having on your life. Emotional Regulation has been made harder through the current cultural climate and my hope is that together we can make your ability to feel at peace with yourself a reality.

I have seen the damage that can occur when we attempt to carry these burdens alone. I hope to help. What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
