I work with men (adults and adolescents) who are figuring out how to show up in their personal and professional lives in ways that balance their skills, histories, and goals. Data tells us that men are less likely to identify their needs, seek help, and talk to their friends about challenges. Popular culture implies that men don’t notice how their mood, anxieties and behaviors impact those around them. And yet, men report that it’s helpful to problem-solve, learn more about their struggles, consider how to activate their motivation, and understand frameworks for making meaningful changes. I believe therapy can achieve this.

You may be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, burnout, overthinking, or the constant pressure to keep up. For many young adults and college students, ADHD, stress, and major life transitions can make it difficult to stay focused, manage emotions, or feel confident in daily life and relationships.

I prioritize LGBTQIA clients and specialize in men's issues.
At Unstuck Therapy, we work with LGBTQ+ adults and introspective men who are tired of carrying stress, self-doubt, or emotional weight alone. You may have learned to push through or keep parts of yourself hidden—yet inside, you feel anxious, sad, or unsure how to move forward. Our therapy space is affirming, nonjudgmental, and real. We understand the unique pressures that LGBTQ+ adults and men face—identity questions, relationship challenges, minority stress, shame, burnout, or difficulty expressing emotions. Therapy here isn’t about fixing you. It’s about helping understand your patterns and unlearn what no longer serves you.

I support my clients in becoming their essential self. Much of the time they show up with childhood strategies, beliefs and inner wounds that limit them in their life and relationships. My goals are to help my clients become more regulated in their nervous systems, more resilient in handling life's challenges and more connected in their relationships. I do this by using the client's body to let them know what their nervous system is trying to tell them. I also help with specific skills each client can work on throughout the week. I also offer Internal Family Systems to help clients manage the parts that are getting in the way.

It’s a relief to find someone you can be yourself with. I bring warmth, humor, and authenticity to therapy—qualities that help build trust, especially if you're hesitant about seeking help. Together, we’ll explore what brings you in, like feelings of self-doubt, a harsh inner critic, or difficulty setting boundaries with other people.

About 11 years ago my wife and I did premarital counseling. It pushed us to heal and deepen our relationship … and after 10 years of a happy marriage, I now know it was one of the best decisions we made. It was so impactful I decided to get my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. Since then, I've helped over 100 couples work through conflict, infidelity, infertility, parenting struggles, premarital, and in-law issues. Every couple needs something a little different, and I use a mixture of proven frameworks including Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Relational Life Therapy.

Therapy for driven, high-achieving men who feel stuck, burned out, or disconnected. You may look like you have it together on the outside, capable, driven, and dependable, but inside feel irritable, burned out, or disconnected from yourself or others. You might be struggling with anger, low mood, anxiety, or repeating relationship patterns and wondering why pushing harder has not fixed it. You want to feel more grounded, confident, and emotionally present instead of stuck in stress or self-criticism.

Just a few years ago, I was caught up in a cycle of self-doubt, shame, and failure. I was early on in adulthood, and already I felt completely worn out; I was convinced my life would end in ruins. Eventually, I was able to seek counseling, and this became a significant factor in helping me find a new sense of hope and freedom. I became a counselor out of a desire to share this gift with others. I aim to create a safe space where my clients can discover new hope on their journey. When you walk into my office, I want you to know that you are welcome here; you belong, and you matter.

Anxiety and depression are deeply human responses to the weight of life. Relationship struggles, loss, current events and major transitions result in stressors we each experience in a unique way. We may have racing thoughts, low energy, sleepless nights, or a constant hum of tension beneath the surface. As a gay trauma therapist, I specialize in assisting those who have lived through uniquely difficult experiences. I give nonjudgemental support to people experiencing phobias, folks from marginalized populations, and those that have been struggling to find joy.

Matthew Schilz is the owner and psychotherapist at MindWell, LLC. Do you feel like you’re constantly fighting thoughts of self-doubt and criticism? Your inner critic is constantly patrolling your thoughts and actions, replaying memories, and ruminating on mistakes. Our inner critics arise in times we don’t have the resources to cope with what is happening around us. Even while friends, family, and colleagues may offer words of encouragement and praise, your inner critic remains loud. I work with folks who want to redefine this experience and untether from the weight of self-judgment, shame, and inner conflict.

Schedule now through my website in my bio! Are you overwhelmed by disturbing intrusive thoughts that seem too terrible to talk about? Do you ever feel powerless to stop looking at pornography? Or are you a man grappling with how to live more authentically in an increasingly complex world? If you identify with any of these struggles, please know that you are not alone and that you can find your way to greater well-being. Opening up about things that you might feel ashamed of or distressed by can be scary, but I believe these struggles deserve to be understood with deep compassion and that facing them head-on is the way forward.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
