Have you tried everything to make your life better and it doesn't seem to work, or it works for a short time and things go right back to the way they were? Have you used alcohol or drugs to medicate uncomfortable feelings to feel normal, but never really feel normal no matter how hard you try? When we have suffered life-altering disappointments we tend to feel that we are different from others. When we try to connect with others, sometimes it doesn't work out as we anticipated. These disappointments can make us feel there is no hope for us.

Everyone experiences difficulties in life and there is no time like the present to find help supporting the emotional weight you may be feeling. Whether it is the pandemic, the economy, or your personal experiences, external situations can have a serious impact on your internal self. By working as a team, my goal is to help you explore the reasons why you have these negative emotions and begin the process of lessening the impact they are having on your life. Emotional Regulation has been made harder through the current cultural climate and my hope is that together we can make your ability to feel at peace with yourself a reality.

Are you looking for clarity and direction? Are you struggling to find your voice? Life transitions are difficult and many times, through the challenges of life we lose sight of who we are and what we truly want. We become misaligned with our grounded and core self and may begin living a life that others have chosen for us. In this process, we lose joy and confidence, our light dims. How do we find our way home to self? How to we begin to move in the direction of authenticity, self-alignment and the inner knowing of our best and highest self? How do we explore our identity and discover who we truly are?

If you've ever asked the question, "“What do we do with our family member whose drug use and drinking is out of control?” you are not alone. I started The Chronic Hope Institute with the intention of offering my answer to that question—one I get almost every day. You have a much greater chance for success if the whole family, not just the addict, is engaged in recovery. My plan is quick and to the point so we can triage the immediate problem. Then, only once we put the initial fire out, would we spend more time addressing the bigger issues.

I believe most problems we experience are caused by a combination of two factors; carrying around too much from the past, and not taking good care of ourselves. The symptoms of Depression, Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Abuse can all manifest from not cleaning up the past and from practicing poor self care in in the present. Using a variety of approaches including, Psychotherapy, Hypnosis, EMDR, and Process Work, we will together to shift this balance. As people get better at nurturing themselves and begin to let go of the weight of the past, they feel better.

I view counseling as walking down the hallway of life and trying to close the doors to one's past. As one walks down the hallway, one must walk into each room and decide what to hold on to and what to let go of. I understands that seeking therapy can be really difficult and enjoys using humor when appropriate. I am compassionate therapist at times but can be blunt. I do not want to waste your time or money therefore I will work hard with you to come up with a treatment plan that works best. My background includes working on a National Burn unit, ICU, ER, Psychiatric hospital, and managing a residential group home.

I approach each client with a genuine investment in uncovering his or her unique qualities, strengths, and passions in order to strengthen their sense of autonomy and feelings of positive self-worth. I believe strongly in the tenets of equality, non-judgment, flexibility, and safety within the therapeutic relationship, and my primary aim is to provide an environment in which self-acceptance can be cultivated and personal growth can be nurtured. Treatment will always be a collaborative effort to discover the essential insights necessary for lasting change while simultaneously learning how to treat yourself with more leniency and personal grace.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
