I have the privilege of accompanying clients as they go through some of the most painful and some of the most joyous times of their lives. I see therapy as a journey that the client and therapist take together with the therapist playing the role of a traveling companion, guide, and interpreter. I have extensive experience providing counseling services to adolescents, adults and families in the various clinical settings. The focus of treatment includes improving self-image, changing negative self-talk, and working through trauma. My approach is collaborative, working together to define and achieve therapy goals.

My ideal client is open and honest in her presentation and is eager to work on identified issues. This client is committed to treatment and arrives weekly (or biweekly) for therapy sessions as per treatment agreement. Ideally, my clients would be somewhat self-reflective, although this is not a requirement. Self-reflection tends to promote the development of insight.

I optimally resonate with clients who are interested in self awareness and taking responsibility for the part that they play in life and relational challenges. They are committed to healing past traumas in order to be able to live as fully as possible in the present. Know thyself, wrote the Greek scholar. My aim is to assist you toward effective and functional self-understanding so that you might pursue and achieve the life goals of which you, as a unique person, are most worthy. Harry Truman had on his desk, whatever job he held, these 10 words: "Know right from wrong. Do right. Do your best." I shall always use these words in your service.

At times in our lives, we have all experienced confusing and sometimes painful events, whether it be the loss of a loved one, an unexpected illness or health issue, a life transition or trauma. Sometimes, the things we have done in the past to seek relief no longer work as they once did. Therapy can be helpful to find new ways to adjust to the challenges and complications of human life, whether it is rooted in a current life event needing temporary support or a more involved issue requiring long term exploration.

I have particular experience working with individuals and couples who are experiencing symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, depression, low confidence, co-parenting struggles, relationship conflicts, and life stressors such as chronic pain and women's issues.
Are you feeling overwhelmed or frustrated? Or do you want to have a more positive relationship with your partner? If your answer to either of these questions is "yes", you may want to consider counseling! I believe that every person can achieve a better life for themselves. I'm not a "keep you in your place" kind of therapist, it's important to me that you feel respected and unjudged. Additonally, I find it vital to take into account the importance of systemic and sociopolitcal challenges that just cannot be ignored when we're talking about barriers to functioning well.

My goal is to help you understand who you are; the skills and strengths you possess; and to build on them to improve the quality of your life. While we can't change situations of the past, we can work together to resolve those feelings and issues that continue to effect your present. Through therapeutic approaches and techniques, we will unearth behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful existence.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
