I enjoy working with individuals (young adults and older adults). Depression, anxiety, grief, life changes/crises, developmental growth, attachment, relational issues, adverse spiritual and religious experiences, and other concerns are my areas of focus. I am open to all faith traditions. In addition to being a licensed professional counselor, I am also an ordained Interfaith Minister (2006). I completed the training on religious abuse/trauma through the Global Center for Religious Research group and “Understanding Cults: A Foundational Course for Clinicians” through the Freedom of Mind Resource Center.

My top priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for you. A fundamental aspect of that is hearing and understanding where you are coming from. The most common issues I help with are emotional trauma, relationship difficulties, workplace difficulties and longer term mental health/illness issues. I worked in state government for 15 years. The understanding that I developed regarding how organizations tend to function is valuable in helping clients dealing with workplace issues.

I am a trauma-informed child, teen and family therapist who is deeply committed to empowering my clients with the knowledge and skills they need to heal wholeheartedly. I treat both the brain and the body and believe that all behavior is communication. Often times, the challenging behaviors we see in ourselves and our children reflects underlying neurobiological processes related to trauma, unmet needs, and lagging social-emotional skills. As a therapist, it is an honor to walk alongside you on your path to healing.

I love helping people address needs related to relationships, family, children, faith, and self-development. I am interested in the intricacies, challenges, and healing of relationships which involves honest appraisal and assessment of interpersonal communications which affect the most important aspects of personhood and human interactions. I enjoy the adventure of accompanying clients as they seek resolution of the challenges of living with ourselves and others in the world. The ultimate goal, in my current understanding, is to be at peace with who we are, who we have been, and continue striving to become the person we want to be.

Of the many lessons that we are confronted with in our modern era, perhaps the most important is that of the vitalness of maintaining connection- within ourselves, first and foremost, so that we can know and call upon those personal resources that facilitate connection with all that is outside of us. Living with a mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety, can threaten our ability to know who we truly are and, as a result, deprive the world of our true gifts.

Human development is a lifelong process, where each moment of life, every human being is in a state of personal evolution. By taking consideration of the bio-psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural factors that shape us, clients provide a unique perspective into their identity, as well as finding their place in the world. When events in life cause feelings of anxiety, extreme sadness, feeling stuck, or overwhelm it may become necessary to retrace, or reprocess these moments to develop resolution.

Counseling is a space used to move into deeper connection with yourself and to release old patterns of being that no longer serve you. I believe when you gain self-regulation skills, self-awareness, and self-acceptance, then you can create the change you seek and experience more freedom/ease. My hope is that you feel safe and fully accepted in my presence so you can explore the more painful parts of your life and honor your strengths. My approach to counseling is client driven and collaborative. I use mindfulness, somatic-based, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed interventions with clients.

—Accepting Clients— Oftentimes we minimize our own experiences and believe we are not worthy of someone else’s time and energy, limiting our capacity in relationships. I sincerely believe all individuals have the capacity for authenticity, mutuality, and growth-producing connection. These experiences can flourish by providing a relationship that is safe, compassionate, and empowering. It is my hope to cultivate those feelings within counseling to take beyond the room. Counseling can help you understand the meaning you make of experiences, past and present, in your life and engage in a deeper relationship with yourself and others.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
