Several areas I have extensive experience include addiction and the impact of addiction on the family, couples and marital family therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma.
Life can be difficult to deal with. Issues from our past or on-going relationship problems can cause us considerable stress. Issues of shame and guilt can make us to feel depressed and anxious and keep us from living to our fullest potential. If you relate to this, I would like the opportunity to help and empower you and/or your family to overcome these obstacles.

Being in an emotional and abusive relationship can cause chronic addiction and complex trauma and depression.
Do you feel you are in an antagonistic relationship? Are you victim of an emotional abuse where your loved one denies what you hear and see? Do you have a loved one who denies responsibility? Do you have some or all of these symptoms: hyperarousal, irritability, chronic fatigue, chronic shame, overeating, substance abuse, trust problems with others or even yourself, difficulty relating to others, avoidance of situations or memories, tightness in shoulders, jaw, stomach... among other symptoms? I help individuals who are victims of abuse. Note: I cannot help actively emotionally abusive relationships if the spouse is antagonistic.

I have made it my goal to meet my clients where they are on the path of recovery from addiction, trauma and other illnesses.
I am a LCSW, LCAC and EMDR certified with over 9 years of experience with many success stories such as, helping clients move from despair to freedom to live the life they deserve by conquering demons of addiction and/or trauma, overcoming the fears of anxiety, the stronghold of depression, no longer lost in the fog of dissociation, in self-control and learning to love self for the first time after years of trauma and abuse. I have been blessed when children and spouses of clients have expressed their thanks for helping their loved one get on the right path of recovery from addiction and trauma.

I have been in the social work field for ten years and have three years of mental health and addiction counseling experience.
The idea of therapy can be daunting, especially if you’ve never participated in therapy before. If you have and the experience wasn’t too great, you could have some anxiety and hesitation around re-starting the process again. All of this is natural, but that’s why I am here! I desire to ensure that you feel heard, feel valued and feel safe. I hope to help you navigate through life, feel empowered in your decision making and to be confident in yourself! I am open to serving children, young adults, and adults looking for ways to become the best versions of themselves.

The word psychotherapist is greek and means "Healer of the Soul". When you come into my office, I will not label you with anxiety, depression, addiction or any other disorder. You will hear me ask questions like: How is your addiction protecting you from pain? What do you not feel when depression numbs you? Once you witness and heal the wounds of your soul (you can also call it trauma), the symptoms (the 'disorder') can disappear. If you are interested in having a deeper understanding and awareness of your emotions, I will help you to develop a relationship with yourself that is characterized by curiosity, respect and compassion.

I've had the privilege of working with individuals and families on various issues, including sexual abuse and assault, other forms of trauma, LGBTQ issues, depression, anxiety, substance use and grief/loss.
There's a beautiful passage by Jacquelyn Small that sums up the way I view and practice therapy: "When therapeutic relating occurs, both parties have dissolved the boundary between the one needing help and the other offering it; they are simply two beings bouncing off each other in truth; We all just need clear people to bounce off of so we can see our own light." I strongly believe that we're the experts of our own lives and sometimes we just need a safe, non-judgmental person to see us, believe our experiences and remind us that we're deserving and healing is possible.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
