Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, work or school concerns, or something else, I imagine you are seeking help because you are not feeling the way you wish to feel. I also imagine that you have hope that it can get better.

Sometimes feelings and behaviors become obstacles to accessing your strength. If you don't accept yourself as you are, you can't change--a paradox, but true. Self-acceptance can be difficult, especially with history of abuse, trauma, or opression in which shame/guilt become integral to your sense of self. Destructive behavior, in whatever form, has its own logic, but is understandable given your history. We cope in ways that serve to protect ourselves in childhood--serving a useful purpose back then. But now, they prevent you from having stable, close relationships and feeling an empowered sense of self.

I specialize in helping survivors of abuse and dysfunctional family systems reclaim their life.
Do you find that there are unhelpful patterns in your life that you keep repeating? Maybe it's multiple unhealthy relationships, or self-sabotaging behaviors. Do you struggle with an unrelenting inner critic that makes every perceived failure feel catastrophic? Perhaps you're in the midst of a big change or transition in your life and you're struggling to adjust. You're most likely looking for a therapist who is warm and compassionate, who understands your specific struggle, and is able to help you make sense of the swarm of thoughts circling in your head.

How often have you heard you're too sensitive? Are anxiety & overwhelm too familiar, and have found yourself in unhealthy relationships? Do you feel misunderstood like you don't fit in and often get hurt? Do you cringe with small talk, yearn for deep meaning & authenticity? Maybe you're a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) like 20 to 30% of us who have heightened senses. We are born empathic, deeply moved, highly affected by grief, violence, and affected by trauma. We feel and notice everything so we need someone who understands us with kindness and compassion because it's hard to be sensitive in an insensitive world, especially now.

As a clinical therapist, I help people who are struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression and loss. I teach my clients to practice what I call "the reverse golden rule": treat yourself as you would treat others! We are often so critical of ourselves, while with a friend we would be kind, supportive, compassionate. My 20+ years of experience have given me the tools to work using an eclectic approach that I tailor to each client. I offer a comfortable, safe environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, where you can feel heard, understood and validated.

I see therapy as healing through understanding. Understanding of your hopes and how to bolster and nourish them, your suffering and how to be with or relieve it. I strive to listen holistically, with humility, and to provide a nonjudgmental space in which the layers of your identity and life contexts can be safely explored. My clinical thinking is psychodynamically-based and is also informed by my background in the arts and my practices in meditation and yoga.

As a certified Lifespan Integration therapist, I work with clients to heal trauma, ease anxiety and depression and help manage challenging life transitions. Lifespan Integration is experiential and uses gentle bottom-up processing to increase neural integration and attain resolution. For most people, both big T and little t trauma are felt viscerally and therefore requires an approach that recognizes the body-mind system. When we are triggered, it is difficult to use skills or reason to override a sense of danger. Additionally, these same triggers persist even when we know full well there is no threat.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
