My passion is working with people who have experienced trauma, who are adjusting to or living with chronic illness, who are navigating life changes, or are struggling with depression and anxiety.
Hi. I'm so glad you're here. You might be reading this because you have experienced trauma and are ready to begin a journey towards healing. Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety or depression and need tools to help you cope. Maybe you are feeling stuck and want support making a change. Regardless of your reasons, taking the first step towards healing and change takes strength and bravery. I am here because I know everyone is capable of change, and because I believe that the burdens of life were not meant to be navigated alone. I am honored to be a trusted part of my client's lives and to witness growth and wellness unfold.

If you are searching for a trauma and EMDR trained therapist who is culturally competent in working with first responders, military, chronic illness, within pregnancy, perinatal and postpartum periods (including birth trauma) or someone who comes alongside parents and helping professionals; you are in the right place. Moving through difficult experiences and complex emotions can be uncomfortable, which is why I operate with respect, kindness, and understanding. I also have a compassionate, yet straight-forward approach that sprinkles in insight; allowing you to move into the growth you are seeking and gain skills for your future.

Symptoms can occur from ongoing stressful life events like infertility, or health issues related to chronic illness, or in demanding careers such as medical professionals and First Responders.
Do you ever feel like simple day to day tasks are more difficult to complete? Maybe you were more social, but now, it feels more comfortable or easier to stay to yourself? Was there a time when you were able to organize your thoughts and feel in control of your emotions, but now you've noticed it's too overwhelming and you feel powerless over your emotions? Have others noticed these changes? These may all be symptoms related to anxiety and depression, but they can also be signs related to trauma. We often think of trauma as single events like an accident or loss of a loved one, or life transitions.

I hold a prior career in art activism and my prior career influences my practice in many different ways. For example, I commit to providing spaces that foster decolonization. My approach includes a lot of transparency and flexibility. I believe therapy is most helpful when it's a hands-on process so I aim to create sessions that end with a tangible tool or goal because sharing our stories is only one piece of the healing process. It’s important for me to share with my clients that I live with chronic mental and physical health issues so I am actively practicing a lot of the same tools I bring forth to clients.

Have you been telling yourself that you want to make changes and improvements to your self care, but been putting it off? It is easy to get in the habit of prioritizing other people's needs and wants ahead of your own. It can be a relief to find a nonjudgmental and approachable counselor to discuss your situation with. I have been counseling adults and couples for over fifteen years now, and have experience working with folks to improve their lives. I use evidence-based treatment that works. I am always expanding my skills and have been EMDR-Trained via the EMDR Institute.

Are you ready for new growth? I believe that you have the innate capacity to heal, develop, and grow. Life can be stressful, and we may come across life experiences that unbalance and overwhelm us. Often the very painful issues such as anxiety, depression, difficulty with relationships, life stage transitions, trauma, illness, and lack of purpose/motivation may present as an opportunity for exploration, personal growth, and development. Therapy provides a safe haven for identifying inner conflicts, exploring feelings, and letting go of limiting patterns of negative beliefs and behaviors.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
