Sometimes it can be difficult to sort out all our feelings, especially when things are messy, confusing, and overwhelming. It is my belief that everyone can benefit from counseling to process the feelings that come with human experience. At the foundation of my practice is forming a strong therapeutic relationship with you. I believe the quality of our relationship is the basis of what can lead to healing. Gaining greater insight into yourself can help you carry out how you want to be in the world.

My name is Robert and I would be honored to be your Therapist. I have been a Social Worker for the past 20 years. The most important thing I need you to know about me and how I work is that I believe Social Work to be a calling and I truly believe in the power of Therapy to change lives. I believe that talking about the things that hurt us provides us with the power to overcome them. I am more interested in your strengths than your diagnoses. I am more interested in empowering you to make your own decisions than I am in you doing what is “right.”

Therapy is a space in which you can discover new understandings of yourself and the world around you as well as grow from difficult times. Through therapy, you can gain a stronger grasp of who you are and approach life with increased awareness. I have experience working with people from all walks of life struggling with their relationships, experiences of trauma, coping with stress, life transitions, anger, depression and anxiety. As an adoptee myself, I have a special interest in working with adopted folks interested in exploring family, identity and belonging.

How do you wish to engage in life? Are you getting what you want? Are you getting too much of what you don’t want? We average over 6000 (mostly negative) thoughts a day. Are you wishing for more loving relationships, good will, affection and purpose in your life? Pain rolls through our lives and understandably we wish to avoid it. We often deflect pain but inevitably it returns. Our habitual behaviors take root over many years, often initially helpful but later in life constrict us. I offer an approach to notice how you incur distress by turning toward what you wish to avoid with a sense of curiosity and care.

Have you been holding it together for a long time and it’s starting to wear thin? The anxiety that lingers, the disconnect in your relationships, the grief that doesn’t have a place to land. I work with individuals and couples across the lifespan who are tired of repeating painful patterns and are ready to move toward something more grounded and connected. As a BIPOC therapist and LGBTQ+ ally, I hold deep respect for the identities you carry and the systems that shape your lived experience. I offer sessions in-person in San Francisco or virtually throughout California.

It can be so easy to take on responsibilities that are not ours and blame ourselves for things that were out of our control. In therapy, my hope is to offer a space to hear your story and move at a pace that feels safe for you. I welcome conversations of all sorts but am especially interested in exploring relationships, grief, anxiety, self-compassion, the end of life, meaning and purpose, complex trauma, and PTSD.

I hold empathy and curiosity as the core of my therapeutic work; the desire and willingness to hear and understand the experience of another. I work from a deeply client-centered lens, holding you as the expert in your experience and holding myself as a fellow traveler along your healing journey. My training specialized in Gestalt Therapy, a practice founded in Buddhist principles, and aimed at growing mindful awareness of your present moment in all of its complexity. This could look like me inviting curiosity in various ways, for example in somatic experiences or encouraging dialogue between multiple, thoughts or feelings.

I became a therapist because I love people and their stories. I appreciate the complexity of people, the therapeutic process, and the reality that multiple truths of the human experience don’t often fit together neatly. Part of my work as a therapist helps people dig down to their truths so they can better hold themselves and communicate honestly with others. In my practice, I have seen therapy facilitate deep personal growth and expansion. As we know and expand ourselves, we can all better hold complexity and bring more health and balance into our lives.

I believe that each and every one of us has the potential to uncover the most thriving version of ourselves- the version that knows we are deeply loveable, worthy, and capable. We uncover and step into that by healing the emotional wounds that cause us to think otherwise about ourselves and the world, by bringing attention to those wounds with empathy and care. Therapy can be a transformative resource on that journey.

My approach to therapy is rooted in the power of healing-in-relationship and the engagement of our whole selves in that process. For those interested, my background as a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist allows for utilizing the body, art, and play as a few of the key instruments in the healing journey, alongside traditional talk therapy practices. My theoretical orientation is also integrative of psychodynamic theories, existential theory, mindfulness, interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, and internal family systems.

I work with couples, adult individuals, families, and transitional age youth (age 18-25). I come from a humanistic and existential therapeutic framework, placing a high value on human capacities, including ones own free will, self determination, and search for meaning. Whether you are seeking therapy to approach or work through a despair within yourself and/or your relationship, have difficulty navigating through life transitions, or are healing from trauma, the choice to engage in therapy is a brave and invaluable one

The therapy room is an archaeological dig, unearthing answers already within you—a process of reclaiming trust in yourself and your story. Our work focuses on creating a space where you can reconnect with your own intuition and self-empowerment. I specialize in supporting teens, children, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and neurodivergent folks, accompanying and supporting them in feeling secure as they traverse their body's metaphors and their psyche's symbols. We'll take a relational, decolonized approach to therapy - acknowledging our identities existent in the room and combatting the narrative that I am the expert of your experience.

How can I find a therapist in 94107?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
