As a generalist, Scott finds that he works from an integrative lens, naturally leaning towards a client-centered, strengths-based, and multicultural perspectives. Often, he likes to integrate aspects of Interpersonal Therapy, family systems, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral theories with the bio-psycho-social framework. With extensive college counseling center experience (18+ years), Scott enjoys working with this population and understands the difficulties that often emerge during this transitional process (identities, relationships, self-awareness, etc.). Scott believed no concern is too big or too small to seek support.

Life's journey is full of detours, bumps, and obstacles. Seeking guidance allows for support through these challenging times. In addition to traditional therapy, I can provide animal-assisted therapy and enjoy working with animals as part of the therapy process. My dog Lana, a golden retriever, is presently in training to become a therapy dog. When Lana’s training is complete, we will be a therapy team providing animal-assisted therapy and animal-assisted play therapy. There is a body of research supporting animals in therapy to enhance physical, emotional, and social well being, and I strive to do just that.

My approach to therapy stems from my philosophy on healing and growth; it comes about through relationships and our connection with others. I believe we all desire a sense of belonging and thrive within community. My role as your therapist is to join you on your journey and provide a safe space where you feel comfortable to explore your inner world, and the world around you. I have experience working with teens, adult women, gender-expansive individuals, and couples. I’ve worked closely with those struggling with relational issues, school issues, life transitions, depression, anxiety, and intimate partner violence.

I work best with those who are interested in and motivated to deeply explore and understand themselves in the service of lasting growth. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, grief, OCD, relationship concerns, family-of-origin difficulties, and feelings of isolation and disconnection. I also have a strong interest in working with individuals with marginalized identities who present with identity-related challenges, especially when living in a context that doesn't support- or actively works to oppress- those identities.

I draw from existential, humanistic, psychodynamic, interpersonal, CBT, and narrative approaches.
As much as it can be amazing and beautiful, life can also be frustrating, stressful, lonely, overwhelming, and hard to navigate. You want it to be easier. You want to not feel so stuck, worried, sad, alone, confused, lost. You want things to be better. You want to feel better. You want meaning and connection. You're tired of being afraid. You want to live the life you see for yourself, but can't seem to reach. Maybe it's hard for you to get out there, connect, and be part of things. Maybe you feel invisible.

Hello! Thank you for considering me to be with you in this process. My style is genuine and warm, while supporting clients to make small shifts that can create big changes. I believe the person seeking therapy is their own greatest resource – that each person has the innate and internal wisdom to navigate pain, and to find a place of peace and strength while healing from emotional wounds. I believe healthy relationships are essential to our health as human beings, and that it is possible to work toward repairing ruptures that have occurred in relationships. I celebrate all forms of diversity and promote justice and equality.

Through somatic therapies and trauma-informed approaches, I will guide you toward developing the ability to be with, and relate to uncertainty in a way that creates new possibilities. Focusing on certainty or "getting everything right" often results in exhausting cycles of anxiety or anger, freeze and sometimes depression/collapse. Embracing uncertainty means learning the practice of leaning into resources wherever you are, whatever is going on, in a constantly changing world. I look forward to guiding you toward relating to your body, mind, others and the outside world in a more sustainable way.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
