As a generalist, Scott finds that he works from an integrative lens, naturally leaning towards a client-centered, strengths-based, and multicultural perspectives. Often, he likes to integrate aspects of Interpersonal Therapy, family systems, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral theories with the bio-psycho-social framework. With extensive college counseling center experience (18+ years), Scott enjoys working with this population and understands the difficulties that often emerge during this transitional process (identities, relationships, self-awareness, etc.). Scott believed no concern is too big or too small to seek support.

I'm told I have a down to earth approach that is knowledgeable and relatable, that brings laughter and sometimes tears safely into the therapy room. I have a large therapeutic tool bag of skills to choose from to meet your needs and get you to where you want to be. I work tirelessly with marginalized communities, most frequently our children, teens and young adults towards living a happy, authentic life. I believe that therapists should embrace and exercise cultural competency while welcoming a diverse community of clients. I pride myself in connecting with all people to find our common humanity while celebrating our differences.

Current Waitlist - We all have a story and some chapters tend to be more difficult to remember and understand than others. I assist others in processing through, coping with, & resolving the ways in which our life experiences are impacting our current state of functioning & well-being. Often times, finding our way feels impossible but my approach is to be a guiding light on your healing journey. Landing onto this page is your first step in a brave, yet perhaps scary new beginning. My approach is practical & often direct, however driven with compassion and non-judgement. I often tailor my sessions with a bit of humor if appropriate.

I work best with those who are interested in and motivated to deeply explore and understand themselves in the service of lasting growth. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, grief, OCD, relationship concerns, family-of-origin difficulties, and feelings of isolation and disconnection. I also have a strong interest in working with individuals with marginalized identities who present with identity-related challenges, especially when living in a context that doesn't support- or actively works to oppress- those identities.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
