I treat acute and chronic mental health issues across the lifespan, specializing in treatment of problems related to depression, mood, psychosis, trauma, substance use, and anxiety.
My approach to care is open, nonjudgmental, and collaborative. I make use of motivational interviewing techniques and dialogue during my sessions mixed with aspects of both solution focused brief therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I strongly believe in a holistic approach to treatment; addressing issues related to clients’ physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs.

I see most of my patients once to twice weekly and engage in depth-oriented/trauma-informed psychotherapy along with medication management.
I believe in an intuitive "inner intelligence" that binds us together and allows us to heal and be healed. This means that a diagnosis or a prescription pad isn't sufficient to treat complex mind-body-heart challenges such as depression or anxiety. My work is focused on creating and utilizing deep therapeutic relationships to discover and bring light to the shadows of the unconscious. These unconscious processes often contributing to dis-ease in day-to-day life. I believe we are all fellow-travelers seeking our own highest truth. I am accepting patients in IL, MN, MT, SD, IA, FL, VA, CA, OR, NE.

From time to time, our lives take an unexpected turn for the worse. We may suffer injury; succumb to physical or emotional illness, or experience conflict, loss, misfortune. Trauma and chronic disability may affect our loved ones or us. Life adversities may temporarily overwhelm our ability to carry on. We may turn pessimistic, doubtful, and hopeless. Feel demoralized, worried, and anxious. Suffer sadness, distress, and anguish. Become angry and resentful. Feel distrustful and quarrel with others. Recognize our isolation and loneliness. At such times, we could benefit from a psychiatric evaluation and treatment, including psychotherapy and prescription medicine.

Mental illness affects people from all walks of life and does not discriminate. I understand this and feel that everyone deserves compassionate treatment regardless of race, political affiliation, gender identity, sexual preference, or religious beliefs. I strive to provide trauma-informed care to all of my clients. This directly impacts my approach to treatment and has given me the ability to connect with my clients on a fundamental level. I understand that getting help can be difficult and that medication is not right for everyone. I will work with you to determine what is the best course of treatment for you.

I provide EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) for a majority of my clients as most have experienced some type of trauma.
Many of my clients complain of feeling stuck in their present thought processes. They face internal conflicts both big and small. They are aware of the way they want to react to situations and approach life, but often they feel sabotaged by destructive ways of thinking. Often these patterns have developed because of traumatic experiences that have occurred over time. Because of these thought processes, individuals can feel symptoms of anxiety and depression. People usually suffer in silence for years without anyone around them having any indication of their internal battle. This can lead to a strong sense of isolation.

I diagnose and treat adults with an array of conditions including trauma, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and psychosis.
Hi! I’m Crystal Turner, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I have learned that, though the complexities that come with mental health are various, the commonality is the desire to be heard, seen, and treated as human and to attain the highest level of functioning in life.

I have particular interest and expertise in complex PTSD, ADHD (particularly in women), substance use disorders, normalizing the concept of neurodivergence, and emerging research on psychedelic medicine.
Traditional psychiatric practices can be rigid and often push patients into boxes established by the DSM. While understanding the importance of identifying specific diagnoses, I strive to break apart labels and eliminate associated stigmas. I believe everyone falls on a continuum of multiple diagnoses, most of which are rooted in generational and childhood trauma. I hope to support my patients both pharmacologically and therapeutically on their journey to understanding and accepting themselves fully. I believe in treating the “whole-person” and emphasize the importance of exploring mind-body connection through mindfulness practices.

Trauma and PTSD Psychiatrists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
