If you're here, I probably don't need to tell you that the rate of depression in college students continues to rise and college counseling centers can't keep up. You're sad. You're empty. You're filled with doom about the plight of the world and you're not even sure if there's a point in trying anymore. I specialize in working with individuals who are depressed, self-harming or having thoughts of suicide. I'll help you balance your mood, increase your self-worth and improve your relationships so that you can actually enjoy life again rather than trying to escape it.
This group will focus on emotional regulation skills based off of Dialetical Behavior Therapy Techniques Eligible Participants include adults 18+ and out of high school. The focus of the group is managing “Big Feelings” so the feelings don’t manage them. Participants will come away with a tool box of skills to use when emotions take charge. The group is appropriate for those who struggle with anxiety, depression, self-harm, anger, and other emotional dysregulation. Total cost of the group is $650 for 10 weeks and intake $75.

Do you feel lost and overwhelmed and not sure where to turn? Have you tried everything you can think of and still feel stuck? Now more than ever, people are feeling anxious and uncertain about life and how to navigate all it requires. Not addressing your feelings can lead to health difficulties, increased fatigue, and less life enjoyment. I believe there is hope.

If you experienced sexual violence in the state of PA, ask me about ways to help cover your costs. I use a relational and feminist framework to help clients understand how our relationships and society affect our healing and connections. I have experience treating those with complex trauma, anxiety/depression, relationship issues, and life transitions. I've worked extensively with survivors of sexual/gender-based violence, C/PTSD, workplace harassment, and those with re-traumatizing legal experiences. I'm proficient in working with those in sex work, the LGBTQIA+ community, and those exploring late-diagnosis neurodivergence.

As an experienced mental health therapist, I feel honored to listen to your story and work together toward change and healing. My style is very warm, supportive, emotions-focused and collaborative. I place the utmost importance on developing a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship. The DBT Skills Group meets virtually every week and participants must attend for a 6-month period of time in order to fully grasp the skills being offered. Participants are also expected to be seeing an individual therapist weekly while in the group as the group is less about processing daily stressors and more about learning the skills. The individual therapy may be provided by me if space allows or provided by an outside therapist.

The decision to seek treatment is not an easy one because the therapeutic process requires you to share your experiences, emotions and concerns with someone whom you've just met. I'm aware that this is often what makes people hesitant to attend therapy and I am hopeful that my personality as a therapist will help you to feel comfortable enough to participate in sessions with me. I am passionate about my profession as a Licensed Professional Counselor and I'm dedicated to helping adults and young adults find balance in their lives and happiness in their relationships.

I love being a counselor! Like most people in the profession, I have personal experience with mental health along with the want to help people. These qualities combined have shaped me into a person who is always willing to lend a hand whether that is listening to someone's story or giving someone a ride home. As a teenager, I struggled with anxiety. I would have panic attacks before school every day. During this time, I had no idea what was happening to me and no one to help. I never wanted anyone to struggle with what I did alone. I am here to help others understand they are not alone and what they feel is valid.

BFRB is a general term for a group of related disorders that includes hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (dermatillomania), and other, less-recognized behaviors like nail biting and cheek biting, etc. These behaviors are not habits or tics; rather, they are complex psychological disorders that cause people to repeatedly touch their hair and body in ways that result in physical damage. BFRB recovery is strongly supported by building bridges of communication, both to ourselves and to others. That's what this group is all about.

Specializing in attachment and trauma, I work with individuals who are seeking to gain greater freedom to make choices around how they live in the world. This may include increasing overall well-being, developing resources for coping, and/or creating a clearer sense of purpose. Often our negative experiences can result in disconnection from our relationships, dissociation or difficulty participating wholly in our experiences, and addictive patterns. Therapy can help us to return to a more intuitive way of living which is centered in curiosity and compassion through connection.

Thank you for checking out my profile. I primarily work with adults and adolescents, but occasionally work with children. My focus is on addictions, mood disorders, or personality disorders. Because of the high rate of trauma with addictions and personality disorders, I offer trauma informed care and best practices to all of my clients. For over 10 years I have run an adolescent Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) group for adolescents and young adults who self harm or have self destructive behaviors. Finally, I offer crisis and health and wellness seminars to local businesses in need.

Self-Harming Support Groups

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
