Anger Management Support Groups in Texas

This is a structured educational program aimed at helping individuals learn how to better manage their anger. Led by trained instructors, such classes typically cover topics such as understanding the root causes of anger, recognizing triggers, learning coping strategies, and developing healthier communication and conflict-resolution skills. Participants may engage in group discussions, role-playing exercises, and relaxation techniques to practice effective anger management techniques. The goal of an anger management class is to provide individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to control their anger constructively and healthily, leading to improved relationships and overall well-being.

Anger and substance use disorders often co-occur, increasing the risk for negative consequences such as physical aggression, self-harm, distressed relationships, loss of a job, or criminal justice involvement. Individuals who experience traumatic events, for example, may experience anger and act violently, as well as misuse drugs or alcohol. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been found to be an effective, time limited treatment for anger problems (Fernandez et. al., 2018; Henwood et. al., 2015). Each of the 12, 90-minute weekly sessions uses a combined CBT approach that employs relaxation, cognitive & communication skills interventions to help reduce anger.

I meet with individuals using a variety of approaches. Work with clients is determined by the problem brought to the session, beginning where you find yourself-cognitively, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I generally work with a client's life story, to look for origins of beliefs and problems, and to find ways to reframe the story so that it is not so limiting. I am experienced in the areas of trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, stress, anger management, conflict resolution, addiction, career counseling and various other issues.

Areas of specialty include men's issues, substance abuse, addictions, self esteem issues, couples work, father/son relationships, dysfunctional family of origin work, anger resolution therapy, relapse prevention, physical/sexual/ verbal/ emotional abuse, and trauma/ post traumatic stress.
I take a very down-to-earth approach to counseling. By focusing on what is real and the truth of one's experiences, I encourage my clients to participate in their own recovery processes and to develop new behaviors that produce new results and better solutions. It is my personal belief that as a society we have developed a dysfunctional lifestyle based on fantasy and myth. We act on these false beliefs every day, keeping us stuck in old, immature patterns of reactionary behavior, instead of responding to life's challenges as adults.

Some anger management participants are mandated to take classes as a condition of probation, part of a plea bargain, or by their employer. Their freedom and/or livelihood depend on completing a certain number of anger management classes, or a recognized anger management educational program. Other anger management participants want a more therapeutic/mental health approach to anger management. Regardless of their initial motivation to starting this group, each participant leaves with highly efficient tools that helps them have better control of their lives and emotions. At the end of this course you will receive a certificate of completion.

There are many reasons to seek the assistance of a professional counselor, but often a person waits until they have hit “rock bottom” and are now facing serious consequences for their behaviors. Perhaps you are dealing with out of control anger, sexual addiction to pornography, or possibly an unfaithful partner. As a result, you're having frequent conflicts at work, lack of trust in relationships, or financial difficulties. If any of this sounds familiar, then the good news is you don't have to continue to struggle alone because I'm here to help !

Anger Management Support Groups

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
