Are you feeling anxious or struggling? This could be through a bereavement, or difficulties in a relationship. Perhaps health issues such as chronic illness, disability or menopause have affected how you are feeling. Maybe work is causing you stress, or you have been made redundant. Do you feel misunderstood or not heard? Maybe you don’t have somewhere you feel supported to be yourself and to speak freely. Perhaps you feel like you don't have anyone to talk to who understands. You may need a place to be heard and to explore your feelings.

I support couples and indivduals facing chronic illness, cultural and religious difference and many other challenges.
Are you anxious about your relationship?  It can be very daunting and even feel shameful or disloyal to approach a therapist about personal problems in your relationship or the fact that you aren't in one or find it hard to sustain one.  We seek help for other concerns why not with relationship problems?  Therapists, like carpenters have tools to offer that can help you make repairs. Speaking about your concerns aloud with an experienced and empathetic listener can disempower the anxiety so the work of recovery can begin.  I have enjoyed working in the NHS and privately over many years on relationship and sexual problems.

I am a psychotherapist based in north London, working both in-person and online. I believe heart connection within the therapeutic space is fundamental for self exploration and transformation. It often takes a painful life event or feelings of aloneness or stuckness to take the first step into therapy. Aided by deep holding, I see these painful moments as the gateway - a coming home - to ourselves and to who we are truly meant to be. I trained at the institute of psychosynthesis and have many years energy healing experience. Working with trauma, anxiety & somatic symptoms are some of my specialist areas.

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength.” Maybe you're feeling anxious and worried about the future. Perhaps confidence and self-esteem are at an all-time low. It could be that the demands of looking after your health have made life a misery and making changes feels too stressful. As an HCPC registered clinical psychologist, I have worked with many people to make sense of and overcome similar difficulties, identify their strengths, and learn coping strategies. I would like to help you get life back on track.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
